Simple Woman’s Daybook–January 13, 2009

January 13th, 2009

Outside my window… It is snowing!  Grey skies, slight wind, but fluffy snow.  Nice, as long as I don’t have to drive in it!

I am thinking… I need a nap!

I am thankful for… a warm home, a loving husband, and sweet children!

From the learning rooms… today is off to a slow start.   I think most of them have done their daily things they do on their own.   I plan to do some Bible with them later, and maybe get in FIAR with Charissa.  We’re doing The Rag Coat by Lauren Mills.

From the kitchen… not sure!  I haven’t conferred with today’s cook, yet!

I am wearing… my blue snowflake jumper with a red turtleneck that has a snowflake embroidered on the neck.

I am creating… elderberry/ginger syrup and some other herb tinctures.

I am going… nowhere!  (Well, I’ll have to run into our little store in town, 1/2 mile away, later!)

I am reading…  Assumptions that Affect Our Lives by Dr. Christian Overman (I highly recommend it, by the way!), Listening to the Language of the Bible by Lois Tverberg (another highly recommended book!).

I am hoping…  that my children with bronchitis and coughing get better.

I am hearing… Bekah doing her part of lunch dishes.   All else is quiet.  Other than the coughing!

Around the house… we are either napping or having quiet hour!

One of my favorite things… snuggling with my 2 year old!

A few plans for the rest of the week:  unearth the sewing room, get my kitchen bar back under control (it’s a hot spot, alright!), and tincture some herbs to help with the sickness.

Here is picture thought I am sharing…

She lost them both within an hour!!!  That cute seven-year-old smile!

Blessings on your day!

Reality Check!

January 10th, 2009

Lest you think that I am perfect (you probably didn’t, but just in case!), here are reality photos!

This is the sewing room a few months ago.

Another view….

At that point in the venture, NO sewing was done out there.  Oh, I take that back.  You can’t see it, but there’s a serger on a counter, and the girls would go out there and stand to serge!!!

I did clean it up a LOT before Christmas….it’s not quite as bad now, but still bad!!!   More reality photos to come as well as finished product of a clean, organized sewing room!!!  (Please don’t hold your breath, though. If you do, I claim no responsibility if you pass out while waiting!)

We started adding on over two years ago.  My husband’s goal was to get it done and not drag it out over 10+ years like the first addition!  (It bothered him more than me!)   So he worked hard to get the upstairs part done, so we could move upstairs while he tore out and then remodeled the master bedroom and bath.  (It used to be a small bedroom, no bath!)   We were up there for about a year, then we were ready to move downstairs.  Jessica and Leah prepared to move into their new bedroom (where we resided for the year!), so they put the things I had not gotten out of their closet out on the landing.  I wish I’d taken a picture of THAT before I started!!!  It stayed there…until….December!

I got a burst of energy and inspiration and decided to get it done.  But you see, that entailed straightening up our old closet to make room for this stuff off the landing!!!

Here is the landing after I took off several boxes!!!

The boxes were actually stacked in two piles almost as high as the top of the picture!!!

Here is the aforementioned closet before I started:

(Now you know why I was dragging my feet a bit to do this!  What you didn’t see, was that there were four boxes of homeschool books to get out of that closet, too!)

Here are pictures of my room with all the "landing boxes" strewn about!

And after a few hours, here is the closet again!

The bottom is definitely fuller, and so are the shelves behind, although you can’t see them too well!

Another view of the closet:

Yes, ALL those boxes stacked on the left, plus the one in front, plus the three or so you can’t see, were stacked on the landing!  And there’s that box of books still on the landing to deal with!!!

Here are "after" pictures of my room!

Ah!  Orderly again!  You would never know, unless you peeked into the closet before and after, that all that mess had been there!

Oh, and guess where the unused homeschooling books are?!

Give up?

Under the bed!

Now for an amazing picture!

This is a pretty good rendition of our house, "drawn" on a pocket Etch-A-Sketch, by Leah!

Here she is holding it in her hand, to give you an idea of the detail this took!

And what do YOU draw on a Pocket Etch-A-Sketch?!

Simple Woman’s Daybook–January 5, 2009

January 5th, 2009

Outside my window… it is sunny, blue sky, and COLD!

I am thinking… of a friend who lost her brother and two nephews just before Christmas.   Praying for her.

I am thankful for… my fall yesterday not hurting me worse than it did!  (I fell on our stairs and slid about halfway down!  OUCH!   )

From the learning rooms… Bible time this morning, two daughters are deciding what project to work on for the next 6 weeks.

From the kitchen… Creamy Spinach Enchiladas, Barbecue Meatballs, and some sort of bread!

I am wearing… my navy floral jumper and a white blouse.

I am creating… some organizational ideas for my planners that maybe I will use this year!

I am reading… well, not yet, but I just got my order from Heart of Wisdom!   Four really wonderful books!!!   I’m trying to decide which one to start with!!!  So stay tuned for next week’s readings!

I am hoping… to get more of our learning going tomorrow!!!

I am hearing… Isaiah wanting "Ma-ma", Dallas upstairs with his helper "de-structing" Susannah and Cassia’s room!

Around the house… Susannah and Cassia are chatting, Dallas is tearing out the aforementioned room, Noah is napping, Isaiah is fussing, Leah is studying the BMV book to think about getting her permit, Jessica is waiting on me to ask me some organizing questions and the younger girls are rearranging their room— again!!!

One of my favorite things… is having talk time with my children!  (We jokingly call it a "Pow-Pow"! )

A few plans for the rest of the week: To clear out our garage, get a good start on organizing the sewing room, go to a llama info meeting tomorrow night, change my playlist back, and hopefully get some sewing done (no, I’m not very ambitious!!!  Ha!)

Here is picture thought (or two!) I am sharing…

Pooh decided to help Isaiah with a puzzle!

And here is the WHOLE gang!

Hope you have a blessed week!

A Homemade Christmas

January 2nd, 2009

I’m a day late–as usual!     But if you read on my daughters’ blog, Seven Sisters, you will know that we girls were up ALL night!  I went to bed at 6 a.m.!

Next week, I’ll try to get back on track with Frugal Fridays.

So here are the final homemade gifts!

A purple dress-up robe for Bekah!

And yes, she DID get a poncho, too!

Leah wanted a petticoat–there are 6 yards of eyelet lace on the ruffle!!!

Anna got a bathrobe (I bought this fabric for her four years ago–took a little rearranging but I got a bigger size out of it!!!  Whew!)

Two years ago, I made Charissa a rice bag shaped like a cat, made out of a towel.  I got the idea this year to make each of the children their own rice bag (they like to microwave them and take them with them to bed to keep warm!).   The rest of them are not so complex–just a tube!    Bekah didn’t get one from me–maybe Jessica will post on their blog a picture of the cute cow one she made Bekah!

And here are just some cute pictures I couldn’t resist adding in!!!

Anna, holding Isaiah, who looks to be trying to tickle Noah!

Isaiah’s favorite "toy" for awhile, was scooping up the trash into a pile, then running and jumping into it!  Here, though, he was trying to hide in the middle of it!   (By the way, the bow in his hair was his idea!)

Great picture of Cassia, outside!  Brrr!

But wait….did you look closer?!  Is she…she isn’t!   Is she?!

She’s barefoot!!!

We won’t tell you WHY she ran outside to throw something into the dumpster…..nor why in the world she didn’t think she needed to put at least flip-flops on!!!!

And here’s a lapful!!!

I hope you don’t get tired of seeing my boys!   They are just too cute together!

Here they are in their tipi that Daddy found for them!

Hope you had a blessed Christmas!

Last Day of the Year!

December 31st, 2008

I know we all say it, "I canNOT believe it’s the end of the year!  Where did the year go?!"    I think you, like me, probably find yourself wondering, "Did I accomplish what I planned a year ago?   Did I accomplish God’s will this past year?"   I know I’m notorious for putting wonderful plans and schedules on paper (I’m afraid I’ve caused the demise of  many a tree over the years!!!  ), but not so famous for carrying them out!!!

There is nothing wrong with writing down plans, dreams, even maybe assigning a time frame for certain goals.   I have Type A tendencies, but I don’t carry them out!  LOL!!!   Seriously, I really do like to have a plan, and work the plan, and all that.

But I also know life doesn’t always fit into nice, neat calendar or Daytimer boxes!

How do you schedule in chicken pox?   Or going to TN to get your mom, then helping her sell her house, go through her stuff and move her?  Or a miscarriage?   A barn fire?  (Um, yes, I think we’ll schedule that next Friday at 4 p.m.—!     )

I probably go a little to much with the flow of things, but I’ve learned that I need to let go my agenda if I’m going to have peace!   When I’m so intense on accomplishing my goals, however wonderful and even spiritual they may be;  when I rush to get back "to the plan" after a crisis, major or minor;  when I focus too much on getting things done and crossed off my list and depend on that for a sense of accomplishment—I am in danger of missing the most important thing.

Life.

Have you read the book,  Keep a Quiet Heart  by Elisabeth Elliot?   In the Introduction, she has a quote by Annie Keary that has resounded with me all these years since I read it in 1995.

"I think I find most help in trying to look on all the interruptions and hindrances to work that one has planned out for oneself as discipline, trials sent by God to help one against getting seflish over one’s work.  Then one can feel that perhaps one’s true work–one’s work for God–consists in doing some trifling haphazard thing that has been thrown into one’s day.  It is not a waste of time, as one is tempted to think, it is the most important part of the work of the day–the part one can best offer to God.  After such a hindrance, do not rush after the planned work, trust that the time to finish it will be given sometime, and keep a quiet heart about it."

Ahhh!  That is the hard part, isn’t it?  To not rush and get our plans back on track after an interruption, to trust, to keep a quiet heart?

It truly is offering our schedule and agenda to God.  Even when we think we have gotten our plans from Him, remember, He is quite at liberty to change your course midstream!   We like to have it all planned out, to know the starting point, the ending point, and all the rest stops in between.  God often asks us to chuck it all and says, "Just follow Me!  I will take you down paths where you will see beauty you couldn’t see on the freeway.  I will make sure you get to your destination just when it is right for you to be there.   In the meantime, won’t you enjoy My presence and My path for you?   It may seem to be a detour, but you will be richer for it!"

I love the story of Much-Afraid in Hinds’ Feet on High Places.  Many times there are detours and even seeming reversals of her path!   But through the journey, she learns to trust the Shepherd to lead her in the way He deems just right for her.   I think one of my New Year’s "resolutions" will be to reread that book!!!

Psalm 37:23 says, "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord:  and he delighteth in His way."  I take that to mean that when I rest in His "ordering my steps", I will delight in His way!!!   But when I’m fretting, stewing and plotting how to get my way, there is no delight!

It was nine years ago today that I found Laine of Laine’s Letters.  I truly felt like "cool waters for a thirsty soul"!!!   She is so in love with our Savior, you can’t help but catch it!   I confess I don’t get up at 4 a.m., but I am again convinced I need to get up earlier than I have been.  I need that time alone with my Heavenly Bridegroom!   Just this morning, in my quiet time, I read in 2 Chronicles 22:19, "Now set your heart and soul to seek the Lord your God;  arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of the Lord God…"  I have read how the home is to be a "little sanctuary" (miqdash me’at, from Our Father Abraham by Marvin Wilson, pg. 214)  That is why I take the verse from 2 Chronicles to mean that first, I must set my heart and soul on God, to seek Him.  The next part of the verse tells me to arise and build the sanctuary of the Lord God…..I believe that means to arise early (whatever "early" is–basically a little while before the rest of the family!) and  arise to build up my home

Here is a meaningful description by Marvin Wilson how the home, as a small sanctuary, was to operate (this was in the time following the destruction of the temple that the rabbis taught this–so it is not "Biblical" in the sense of out of the Bible, but I believe there is nothing that contradicts what God wants for our homes here!)

"As a small sanctuary, the rabbis taught that the home, like the Temple, was to be set aside for special purposes.  These included the worship of God (a ‘house of prayer’), the learning of Torah ( a ‘house of study’), and the serving of community needs (a ‘house of assembly’).  Just as the shekinah (the abiding presence of God) filled theTemple, and as light, a symbol of the Divine, brightened the holy place through the menorah (the seven-branched lampstand), so each home was to reflect God’s glory through prayer and praise.  In addition, just as the golden table for the bread of the Presence in the Tabernacle contained loaves of bread set in two rows (Ex. 25:23030; Lev. 24:5-9), so on Sabbath eve in the home two loaves of  hallah are set on the table to symbolize God’s sustaining presence among His people."

What a beautiful picture of what we are to build our homes to be!  This "construction", if you will, is not done with boards, nails, siding, and windows, but with prayers, praises, study of God’s Word and meeting the needs of others (serving first in the home, then outward to the community).  Can you imagine the difference in the world if each Christian home truly became a miqdash me’at?  And if every woman worked to "build her house", serving her family by "setting her heart and soul to seek the Lord her God" and then "arising to build the sanctuary of her Lord God"?

What a beautiful oasis to the weary ones around us it would be!

Oh, that is my prayer!

To confirm my readings in the Scriptures, when I finished my quiet time, I read a page in The Heart of the King by Ron Auch (remember I told you this book is worth its weight in gold!!!).  I will share a few tidbits.

"Man can help you know about God, but pursuing God through prayer can help you know God.  There is a world of difference between knowing about God and knowing God.  Jesus said, ‘You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God’ (Mt. 22:29).  You are in error because you do not know.  Once again we are dealing with the heart knowing, rather than head knowledge.  You err because you do not know the Scriptures.  This does not mean you have a wrong interpretation of the Scriptures.  It means you do not have a knowledge of the one who inpsired them. Subsequently, you do not know the power of God; you merely know of it.

"To have more insight than your teachers, you must understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.  That will only come through a pursuit of Him.  Does your heart throb at the thought of spending time with Him?  Can you identify with Isaiah when he says, ‘My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you’ (Is. 26:9)?"  (I like the KJV rendering of Is. 26:9, "With my soul have I desired Thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek Thee early…")

"Does your heart throb at the thought of spending time with Him?"

Oh, that is what this is—a true and holy love!   He wants to spend time with us!  He desires it and is anxiously awaiting our coming to the private trysting place.

Does your heart beat to love Him more?   To hurry to get to that blessed spot alone with Him for a few moments to commune with Him, to look into His dear face?

Often when I struggle to get up in the earlier hours, this quote by Thomas R. Kelly from The Spirit of Loveliness (by Emilie Barnes) runs through my mind:

"Hasten to Him who calls to you in the silences of your heart."

He is waiting.

Let’s not disappoint Him!

Shall we run to Him now?

The Simple Woman’s Daybook–December 29, 2008

December 29th, 2008

Wow!  The last Daybook for 2008!!!

I’ve had a busy and wonderful time with family these past few days!   Hopefully I can get back into the swing of things here!

FOR TODAY, 29 December, 2008…..

Outside my window… sunny with that beautiful blue sky!   I haven’t been outside yet, but it looks cold!

I am thinking… how good the Lord is to meet our needs–especially our emotional need!

I am thankful for… a church where the pastor preaches what God wants.   The Lord used his sermon yesterday to minister to me!

From the learning rooms… still on break!

From the kitchen… Calico Bean Bake, cornbread and Cheesy Broccoli/Cauliflower dish (yum!!!   )

I am wearing… my exercise clothes!!!

I am creating… a few more gifts for friends!  (shhhh!)

I am going… to have Bible time with the children after my shower.

I am reading… trying to finish Our Father Abraham before it goes back to the library!  (And I thought January 2 was plenty of time!!!)

I am hoping… to get some organization done this week.

I am hearing… O Holy Night on the piano, and Isaiah fussing because he doesn’t want to go "poppy" (potty!)!

Around the house… Cassia on the piano, Isaiah on the poppy  (and Susannah is with him), Noah is on the couch with a "brr" on his toe where Isaiah accidentally dropped a fire engine (play engine!!!), the rest are in their rooms reading, organizing or playing.

One of my favorite things… is watching our toddler!   He’s soooo much fun!

A few plans for the rest of the week:   having friends over for New Year’s Eve, Dallas’ birthday tomorrow, going out with friends on Friday to celebrate their anniversary and hubby’s birthday!

Here is picture thought I am sharing…

And today, Isaiah will show you how to finger paint, using Cocoa Wheats!!!

One more–too cute to pass up!

Have a wonderful day!

Happy Birthday, Jessica!

December 24th, 2008

Today is my oldest daughter’s 22nd birthday!   Where did the time go?   If I had a scanner, I’d put in some OLD pictures! LOL!!  Maybe I can get some with the digital later.

Jessica is my right hand girl (well, one of them!   ), but don’t let her sweet, servant-hearted demeanor and ready smile deceive you—she was quite the firecracker when she was younger!  We could tell all kinds of "Jessica stories"!  (My husband used to entertain a lady at work with daily "Jessica stories"!!!)  I was going to send her to Dr. Dobson so he could rewrite his book on The Strong Willed Child–I was convinced he’d never seen one THIS "strong-willed"!!!

Thankfully, we kept at our training (and kept at it, and kept at it….) to where she is a lovely, lovely young woman today!   As I think of where I was at 22, she is eons ahead of me!!!

I jokingly tell her, "When I grow up, I want to be like you!"

And for 22 years, we have celebrated her birthday on her day as a family, usually having her party then, too.   She loves having her birthday this time of year, but we haven’t been to a candlelight Christmas Eve service since 1985!     And at that one, I was bawling my heart out because I wanted a child so desperately!   How like the Lord to give me, exactly one year later, a beautiful blessing!

I know I speak for all of us (but they can blog about it themselves if they want!), that we all love her VERY MUCH and are so happy and grateful to have her in our family!

Thank you, Lord, for blessing us with Jessica!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JESSICA!!!

May you have a blessed and wonderful day!  (It’s already been fun, doing a quick "Christmas run" together!!!    )

Jessica and Leah–best friends and sisters!

I lovey you!

We’re friends!!

Love,

Mommy-Dear

Our Family Motto

December 23rd, 2008

I think I have found our new family motto!    And where?  Dove milk chocolate/caramel wrappers, of all places!!!!  (Sweeeeet!!!)

I don’t read them all, but when I read this one, I saved it.  It’s perfect!!!!

"In chaos there lies opportunity."

So there you have it!   The Richardson Family Motto in 5 words!

Off to find more opportunity in the chaos!!!

(A short post….but a sweet one!!!    )

Blessings!

Icy Days!

December 21st, 2008

If anyone wonders where I’ve been….we were without power from about 8:30 a.m. Friday until 3 a.m. yesterday!    The ice storm that went through Friday has caused some major outages!   Some friends who  live about 1 1/2 hours away are being told it could be Christmas Eve before they have power!   And, like us, they make a lot of their gifts!      Today we’ve had lots of "bleeps"–where the electricity goes off and on (and off and on a few more times!  Complete with all the beeps of microwave, carbon monoxide detector and cordless phones!) or off for about 10 minutes (about the time Dallas gets ready to go turn on the generator!)

We had generator power Friday and into Saturday, but that doesn’t work well with electronics!  And 6 of our 7 machines are electronic!    So–no sew!        We did LOTS of cutting out, though!

And right now, I’m carrying my little flashlight in my pocket!!!

Outside is musical—-tinkling ice falling from the trees!   There are several big branches down, and one of the clothesline poles is flat.

And it is COLD!  When Isaiah came downstairs after his nap, he said, "Nigh-night!   Cold!   Brrrr!"    (With the motions to go with it!  Too cute!)

Here are some pictures of life outside!

If you look behind the swingset, you can see the branch that is down (and where the clothesline pole used to be!!!)

You can see even more pictures at my daughters’ blog Seven Sisters.

We are staying inside, drinking hot chocolate and staying WARM!    And…well, getting lots of stuff cut out!  Throughout the house are girls busy sewing, and when the electric goes out, they get all ready to sew as fast as they can when the electric comes back on!    (And when it goes off, you can hear groans and yells of aggravation throughout the house!   )

I think we may start a new tradition—celebrating Epiphany for all the gifts we don’t get done in time for Christmas!!!

Hope you are warm and safe on this cold, icy night!

Blessings!

A Homemade Christmas–Doll Clothes

December 18th, 2008

Only one week until Christmas!  One of my challenges this season is making sure Christ doesn’t get lost even in making gifts!!!   And family relationships, too!   You know–being sequestered away in your room or sewing room so no one sees what you’re doing?  But then they don’t see you, either!

Yesterday we were able to all come together and sew as we designated it a sewing day for some friends–so it was okay for us to see what each other was doing!   It was a lot of fun, with interesting singing, strange quotes (complete with imitations of the original character who said it with his/her/its accent), growling at our mistakes (louder ones if we made the same mistake again!), and the later it got, just general silliness!

THAT is what makes family memories, whether at a holiday time or not.   So I want to be careful to not get so caught up in the doing that I miss the living!

Another thing that I want to be careful of is that we don’t get so caught up in celebrating His first coming that we miss preparing for His second coming.  I have often pondered how the Israelites weren’t prepared for Jesus’ First Coming, because they were expecting a Conqueror to free them from the tyranny of the Roman Empire.   Instead He came in love, as a meek and lowly Lamb of God to be sacrificed for our sin.

And now, interestingly enough, as we look forward to His Second Coming, I fear too many are expecting a God of Love and Compassion, when this time He will come as a Conqueror.   He certainly IS a God of love and compassion, gently and tenderly leading us along.  But if we use that as an excuse to hang on to our sins or act like this world is our final home, being more concerned about the economy than holiness…..well, we are in danger of again misunderstanding and being unprepared for His coming.

So I would encourage you, as you celebrate Christ’s birth (although we know He wasn’t really born this time of year), that you don’t lose sight of the most important aspects of this season, and what it meant for "Our great Creator became our Savior", as well as preparing for His coming again–in great power and majesty!

May we be found expectantly awaiting our Bridegroom’s return!

And now some pictures of more projects we did last year–some for friends, some for our little girls.

Our friends had two children who were receiving the Bitty Twins (who are the same size as the Bitty Baby), so we made some "John Deere" outfits for them!

Our little girls all wanted some Native American outfits for their dolls, but seeing the price, I thought for sure I could make them cheaper!!!  I made SIX of these for the price of ONE from a well-known company!!!  (The other three were also for friends’ children.)   And these had more beads on them!!!

This was for a friend’s daughter…….

With a matching one for her doll!!!

I really love making these homemade things….I just wish I’d get started earlier!!!!   Having three November birthdays right at the first of November makes it hard to think about Christmas sewing then.  I did have plans to start earlier this year, but circumstances beyond my control put me behind a few weeks (then my lack of motivation/ambition put me behind another week!!!   ).    But unlike past years, I am not stressing so much about getting it all done.  I have decided I will do what I can.   That way, I can focus on my family time and celebrating Christ instead of wishing it were all over!

Although I HAVE decided that next year, the girls MUST get their lists of Christmas things to order to me by December 1!!!!   ( I spent waaaay too long ordering the other night and barely made the standard shipping dates!)

I pray you will stay focused on Christ and your family not only during this season, but all through the year.

Blessings!
