Saturday Psalm and Praise

October 11th, 2008

In all the turmoil of the world, I am so amazed how God is keeping my heart in Him.  It’s not that I have no fears, but I have a deep, abiding peace that He is ultimately in control, and He will take care of us.  That doesn’t mean I won’t suffer or that I will go on blissfully as if nothing is happening, but I need not fret about what to do, how to prepare, what if……. HE is my ALL!

And my quiet times have been confirming this!

For today, some thoughts from three different Psalms:

Psalm 31:1-3

"In Thee, O Lord, do I put my turst;  let me never be ashamed :  deliver me in Thy righteousness.  Bow down Thine ear to me;  deliver me speedily:  be Thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.  For Thou art my rock and my fortress;  therefore for Thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me."

The whole Psalm is good!

Psalm 41:1-2, 11-13

"Blessed is he that considereth the poor:  the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.  The Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive;  and he shall be blessed upon the earth:  and Thou wilt not deliver him unto the wil of his enemies."

"By this I know that Thou favourest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me.  And as for me, Thou upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before Thy face for ever.  Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting.  Amen, and Amen."

Psalm 71:1-8, 14, 16, 23-24

"In Thee, O Lord, do I put my trust:  let me never be put to confusion.  Deliver me in Thy righteousness, and cause me to escape:  incline Thine ear unto me, and save me.  Be Thou my strong habitation whereunto I may continually resort:  Thou hast given commandment to save me, for Thou art my rock and my fortress.   Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.  For Thou art my hope, O Lord God:  Thou art my trust from my youth.  By Thee have I been holden up from the womb:  Thou art He that took me out of my mother’s bowels:   my praise shall be continually of Thee.  I am as a wonder unto many;  but Thou art my strong refuge.  Let my mouth be filled with Thy praise and with Thy honour all the day."

"But I will hope continually, and will yet praise Thee more and more."

"I will go in the strength of the Lord God:  I will make mention of Thy righteousnes, even of Thine only."

"My lips shall greatly rejoice, when I sing unto Thee;  and my soul, which Thou hast redeemed.  My tongue also shall talk of Thy righteousness all the day long:  for they are confounded, for they are broguht unto shame that seek my hurt."

Nothing that happens, either to us individually or as a nation, has taken God by surprise.  He Who knows the beginning to the end has it all under His control.   He often used ungodly nations to chastise His chosen Israel, and many times used the gods His people chose to trust in instead of Him to teach them that He is the ONLY true God, the only One Who has power to do anything.

As much as I am angry at the self-serving people who got our country into this mess, I can’t really lay all the blame at their door.   And if we think choosing the "right" person for office (be it president, governor, congress, whatever) will change everything, we’re wrong.  We have a responsibility to vote, but that isn’t what’s going to ultimately change this country.

It will only be as we are willing, as Christians who say we follow Christ, to truly follow our Savior and live giving Him control of our every moment, our every breath.  He has it anyway, but as we acknowledge He is Lord in everything, the world sees a powerful God that makes a difference in people’s lives, vs. a nice, comfortable god we pull out to reassure us or ask a little blessing on our endeavors that we have no intention of submitting to the true God’s will.  Even our good works can be iniquity (Mt. 25:41-45), if they are not truly done for Him.

I have been soul-searching here lately.   I certainly am not perfect, and I want Him to show me the ways where I actually am a "false witness" to His Name, His character.  It is my desire to live in a way that points in every way to Him and Him alone.

In the little booklet I’ve been reading, In the Footprints of the Lamb by George Steinberger (available from Mount Zion Bible Institute), there are a few statements that stood out this morning:

"What is humility?  Humility is not a virtue, but rather the soil in which all other virtues thrive.  No virtue which has not grown in this soil has any value."

"Humility is the power which can tolerate the shortcomings of others."

Oh, may we seek this loveliness first and foremost!   There is a far greater crisis in the world today than the stock market collapsing and another Great Depression.  How much worse is the famine of God’s Word being believed for what it is, not altered to suit our wants!  How great the crisis of a collapse of holiness that comes from this humility!   And much worse is the Great Void of those who would truly follow in the footprints of the Lamb of God!

Whatever happens in the days and weeks and months to come, I pray that we all will be more serious about seeking Him and hearing Him and obeying Him—letting go of our preconceived ideas and follow Him wherever and however He leads.

I have no doubt that He will take care of His own, though it may be through ravens in the wilderness!

But are we willing to stand for God against the modern day "prophets of Baal"?

We can only do it in His strength and at His bidding—and it starts in the home, where we must put Him first and all must flow through Him.   All my plans, my homeschooling, my computer time, my time discipling, being with my children, my homemaking….all to the glory of Him.   All done seeking His will first, trusting His plans.

Proverbs 3:5-6

"Trust in the Lord with ALL thine heart;  and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In ALL thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths."

Whom will I trust?  What will I fear?  I am to fear nothing but God Himself.  Will I reserve anything for myself?  Or will I give it ALL to Him–the only One Who is able to keep me?  Will I acknowledge Him in some ways, but in others "lean unto my own understanding"?  I cannot expect Him to direct my paths until I first surrender ALL.

"It is only the fully surrendered heart that can fully trust God for all that He has promised."

Andrew Murray

If I am doubtful, fretful, fearful–it is because I have not fully surrendered an area of my life to Him.

This is my desire, to be fully surrendered in every area of my life.   Then I have that deep, quiet peace that doesn’t care about the storms above…..it is too far below to feel it, and is undisturbable as long as I abide in Him.

Remember this quote by Dr. A. T. Pierson:

"The peace of God is that eternal calm which, like the cushion of the sea, lies far too deep down to be reached by any external trouble or disturbance;  and he who enters into the presence of God, becomes partaker of that undisturbed and undisturbable calm."

Rest.

Surrender.

JOY!

Frugal Fridays–Feeding My Family for Fifteen (or Less!)

October 10th, 2008

Looks like Crystal is still on her break, but I need to keep posting to make this a habit!

Last night we had a wonderfully yummy dish Susannah made called Over-Stuffed Shells from Gooseberry Patch’s Flavors of Fall cookbook.  The cost will seem a bit higher, however–it made 1- 9X13 dish plus a smaller 8X10 dish, and just from the 9X13 we got probably 12-14 servings!   If we hadn’t forgotten and left the smaller dish in the oven to keep warm and not found it until this morning, we could have had at least another 8 servings from it!

Over-Stuffed Shells

10 oz.  pkg. frozen spinach (we had some chard in the freezer, so she used that–no taste difference!)

2c. shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1c. cooked ham, diced

2c. chicken, cooked and shredded

15 oz. container ricotta cheese (we used cottage cheese)

1/2 c. Parmesan cheese

1/2 c. fresh parsley, minced (we used less of the dried)

1 1/2 tsp. garlic powder

1 1/2 tsp. onion powder

28 oz. jar Alfredo sauce, divided (made her own, recipe following)

12 oz. pkg. jumbo shell pasta, cooked

Can garnish with parsley and chopped tomato

Mix spinach, 1 1/4 cups mozzarella cheese, ham, chicken, ricotta, Parmesan cheese, parsley, garlic and onion powders together; set aside.  Spread 2 cups Alfredo sauce into the bottom of an ungreased 13X9 baking pan and one cup in an ungreased 8X8 baking pan (we used the 8X10).  Spoon about 2 tablespoons of filling into each pasta shell; arrange shells in a single layer on top of Alfredo sauce.  Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until sauce starts to bubble; sprinkle remaining mozzarella cheese over the top.  Bake for an additional 5 minutes or untl cheese melts; garnish with parsley and tomatoe.  Serves 12.  (PLUS!)

Alfredo Sauce

This is double the original recipe to make enough for the above dish.

1/2 c. butter

2 c. heavy cream

2 clove garlic crushed (we used minced garlic–about 1/8 tsp. per clove)

3 c freshly grated Parmesan cheese (well, that would be nice, but we used the store-bought stuff in the pasta aisle!)

1/2 c chopped fresh parsley (again, we used less of the dried)

Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium low heat.  Add cream and simmer for 5 minutes, then add garlic and cheese and whisk quickly, heating through.  Stir in parsley and serve.

With this meal, she made Parmesan Toast, which is toasted bread spread with butter and sprinkled Parmesan cheese on top.   Keep warm in the oven.   She used homemade bread.

We also had a salad with this.   We make a big salad that usually lasts 2 suppers and maybe 2 lunches depending on how "piggy" we get with it!

She said the total cost of the Shells and bread alone was $12.50, but that didn’t include a cost for the chicken since we grow our own, I’ll bump it up to $15.    So that did not include the salad, BUT it also "would have" fed us (had we not overlooked the second pan!) for a hearty supper and a light lunch.  Not bad, really!

So even with the salad, I say this is within the limits!   And you get to fight over who can have the rest for lunch the next day!  (Don’t forget to check the oven before going to bed just in case someone left it in there…it makes you want to cry to have to throw out that yummy food!    )

I’ve asked my oldest to figure out how much one of her breakfasts are!    So maybe later or next week I can add a frugal breakfast idea for a big family!

Please share any yummy ideas you have, too–leave a comment and/or a link!   (Mr. Linky was a bear to get up last time, so I’ll just go by comments this time!)

Enjoy!

Happy Birthday, Isaiah!

October 7th, 2008

I don’t usually post twice in one day, but I wanted to post a happy birthday to my sweet little guy!  He’s two today!   It’s so hard to believe–where DOES the time go?!

I am so grateful God gave us another boy so Noah could have a buddy!  (Plus, we’re glad Noah has someone to share the limelight with….we were getting worried that that boy’s head was getting too big for him!   I mean you can imagine after 7 sisters, how much attention he got, right?!    )

We actually celebrated on Sunday with the grandmas.   So here are some pictures of our little cutie that keeps us smiling!  (He and his brother are TMFP status–The Most Favored Prince!)

The cake was good–spatula lickin’ good!

Look at that smile!  (Actually, both of them!)

He really was quite good at unwrapping!

He has this "cock your head" smile he does for the camera now!

Here he is posing with his warm nigh-nights from Grandma R.!

Daddy getting a small car detangled from all the packaging!

(With LOTS of supervisors! )

The tractor is a hit with BOTH boys…it’s hard to get Noah to

give Isaiah’s own present back to him!

This isn’t from his birthday, but it’s a good shot!

Happy Birthday, Little Man!  We love you!

Do We Really Understand the Battle?

October 7th, 2008

Anyone who really knows me knows that I don’t homeschool the usual way.  I’m not even sure what the usual way is anymore!

I have learned to focus on the most important thing, which, as I’ve shared before, is all about relationships.  The academics are a nice side benefit, in my way of thinking!   I don’t mean we just la-di-da through life, but I don’t agonize over algebra, chemistry, or participial pronouns!  (Please don’t ask me what that last one is!)

I understand the need for academic excellence–to a point.   But when homeschool moms that talk to me don’t know how we have time to sing 4 hymns a day (huh?!) or wonder how we have time to sew and can, or spend so much time worrying about the right math program or science or foreign language program, I fear we’ve lost sight of the most important reason we should be homeschooling.

The hearts of our children.

Do you think I’m a broken record?  Do you say, "Yes, yes, that’s important, but what DO you do for math?"

Here are some frightening quotes that might help you understand the battle is NOT about how well educated your children are.

“If it were possible to control the learning of all individuals, in the way both of ideas and of emotional attitudes, as they come on to the stage of life, it would be possible to modify the whole complex of our social life, or our civilization, within the comparatively short space of one or two generations.” — CHARLES A. ELLWOOD

“The school is the germ plasm of the higher civilization. Teachers are, therefore, in charge of social selection at the source of origins for each new generation; they can even introduce at will mutatiions of their own invention.” — ROSS L. FINNEY

“Oh, you blind leaders who seek to convert the world by laboured disputations! Step out of the way or the world must fling you aside. Give us the young. Give us the young and we will create a new mind and a new earth in a single generation.” — BENJAMIN KIDD

Who are these people?  Those carrying on in the spirit of Auguste Comte.  Never heard of him?  Me, either.  But he is basically the "father of sociology".  Even though you won’t hear of him even in sociology courses!   His views have shaped the educational system.   In fact:

"Comte devoted his entire life to blueprinting a philosophical SYSTEM which could be used to sanction total control over all the people of the world for all time—eliminating and/or destroying all contrary philosophies and religions, particularly Christianity."

Does this make you realize the high stakes in this battle?  The stakes are our children’s hearts–which way will they be influenced?   Towards their peers, the system, the agenda of those who know in one to two generations they can gain control over people–willingly?

This makes me question how I educate my children.  I canNOT follow an agenda that was created to reshape the thinking of the young and alienating them against God and their family!

That doesn’t mean I don’t make sure my children know how to read and write and think….do basic math….but why I am so worried about "keeping up" with something designed to destroy the very things I hold sacred–God and family?

I know some states require more documentation, testing, etc. than my state does.  But I would find every way I could to be creative and get around "bowing to the gods of education" that these kinds of people have set up.  I am not saying everyone in the public school system is out to get us– there are many good-hearted and well-meaning people in there.  But the system is flawed.

So, if it’s broke, please don’t duplicate it at home.

The stakes are too high.

Simple Woman’s Daybook 5

October 6th, 2008

For today, October 6, 2008.

Outside my window…. it is partly cloudy, breezy, and definitely a bit warmer than it has been!   The bean field across the road is being combined.   Must be fall for sure!

I am thinking…. of a cyberfriend who lost both her family dogs today.   Wishing I could give her a real hug!

From the learning rooms…. today went better for getting on track!   Used God, What’s Your Name? mainly for the little girls, with the older girls listening in.  One daughter is doing a research project on the three branches of government, (and we are all appalled at how much our congressmen are making!   ), another is trying to get her math for the rest of this fall semester done so she can delve totally into the Revolutionary War, Happy Phonics with the younger set.   We are just starting Elections in America by Charlene Notgrass.

I am thankful for…. knowing God is ultimately in control, whatever happens in the world!

From the kitchen…. bean and rice burritos and fruit salad.

I am wearing…. a white blouse with a navy floral jumper.

I am reading…. Passionate Housewives, Desperate for God (I found it, YAY!);  continuing to read A Woman’s Call to Prayer and Holy in Christ;  also reading a book "accidentally" left behind by someone at church yesterday, In the Footprints of the Lamb by George Steinberger (1915)–a really good read!

I am hoping…. to have enough ambition to get the sewing room cleaned up this week!

I am creating…. well, I plan to cut out a new jumper this evening, a new twist on a pattern.  I also want to get my knitting projects sorted out so they are more available!   And I actually was thinking yesterday about Christmas presents I want to make for the girls, but I’m not going to post those!

I am hearing…. the sound of my husband on a Bobcat cleaning out the goat pens, with the sound of the little girls and boys playing in the backyard.   Oh, and I just heard Isaiah giggling with the older girls!

Around the house…. the girls are making applesauce, one is working on supper (actually sounds like she is goofing off with her next older sister!).

One of my favorite things…. is snuggling with my little guy (he’ll be 2 tomorrow!)

A few plans for the rest of the week…. continue with my decluttering (found the bar counter and my desk! ), finish the applesauce and apple dumplings, go through more of my dad’s stuff, continue helping a dear friend move and make a new jumper!  (Pretty ambitious list there!)

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you….

Frugal Fridays–Feeding My Family for Fifteen (or Less!)

October 3rd, 2008

Crystal Paine is taking a blogging break, but I’m going to post my Frugal Fridays post anyway!   I’ll just miss checking in on so many other people’s frugal ideas, too!

Two of my daughters do the bulk of the supper cooking.  Usually Sunday nights are either junk nights, or clean out the refrigerator and junk nights!

So again, my 16 year old daughter came up with a yummy meal that actually costs $18, but again, we had lunch the next day!  So I will say $10–we had cucumbers and cherry tomatoes out of our garden!  Yum!

Sweet ‘n Saucy Meatballs

(unknown origin! : )

3 lb. ground beef

3 eggs

1 1/2 c. oats

2 1/2 c. water

3 3/4 c. ketchup (we make a simple one at home)

2 1/2 c. sugar (we use evaporated cane juice)

In a big bowl, combine beef, eggs, and oats.  Mix well.  Roll into 1 1/2 inch balls.  Place in a greased 9X13 pan (you may need two).    Mix together water, ketchup and sugar.  Pour over meatballs.  bake at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes or until done.  Makes about 16-18 servings or 80 meatballs.  Enjoy!

Quick Homemade Ketchup

1 can (15 oz.) tomato sauce

1 c. sugar

4 tsp. salt

1/2 c. vinegar

Mix well.  Yields 3 cups.

Sour Cream Enchiladas

(from Goose Berry Patch A Pinch of This, A Dash of That)

2-10 3/4 cans cream of chicken soup (you can make your own–recipe follows)

1 c. sour cream

2 c. cheddar cheese, grated

4 1/2 oz. can chopped green chiles, undrained

1 sm. onion, diced

2 T. picante sauce

2 doz. corn tortillas (she made it with flour tortillas, although corn would be somewhat healthier!)

Garnish:  shredded lettuce and sour cream

Combine all ingredients except tortillas in a large saucepan.  Heat and stir over low heat until cheese melts.  Soften tortillas in very hot oil in frying pan, for a few seconds on each side.   Drain on paper towels.   (You can warm these in a non-stick skillet without the oil).    Spoon 2 tablespoons of soup mixture onto a tortilla, roll, and place in a baking dish.  Continue with remaining tortillas.  Pour remaining soup mixture over rolled tortillas and bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.  Top with more cheese just before serving.  Serve with shreeded lettuce and sour cream.

Uncanned Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup

(from Whole Foods for the Whole Family)

3 T. butter or oil

3 T. flour

1/4 tsp. salt

dash of pepper

1/4 tsp. poultry seasoning or sage

1 1/4 c. milk (can use half chicken broth)

(can add a bit of chopped chicken, too)

Melt butter or oil in saucepan.  Stir in flour and seasonings.  Cook over medium heat until bubbly.  Add milk slowly, stirring with wire whisk.  Cook until thick.  Makes 1 cup or 1 "can" condensed soup.

Oatmeal Rolls

(from recipefiend, June 26, 2006 entry)

2 c water

1 c oatmeal

3 T butter

Bring to a boil and cook 1 min.  Cool to lukewarm.  (Or you can use leftover oatmeal;  heat it to lukewarm and add butter).

Dissolve in a large bowl:

1 pkg. yeast

1/3 c warm water

Mix in:  Oat mixture and remaining ingredients:

1/3 c brown sugar (we like to use Sucanat in place of brown sugar)

1 1/2 tsp. salt

4 c flour

Beat until smooth.  Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.  Knead until smooth about 6-8 minutes.  Let rise one hour.  Punch down.  Let rest 10 min. Shape into 18 balls.  Place in a greased 9X13 pan.  Let rise until doubled (about 45 minutes).  Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Hope this helps you as you plan meals your meals!   If you have some thrifty yet fairly healthy recipes/menus, please share in the comments, or if you have a post, link with Mr. Linky!

Blessings!

Tapestry

October 1st, 2008

Over at Generation Cedar, Kelly has this wonderful story by Ann Voskamp, and I’d like to quote some of it here:

"The mundane, ordinary things are genuinely tremendous undertakings requiring Christ-courage. Who has the courage to live a life of little, unnoticed sacrifices? Loving an angry child, making a bed, kneading dough in the kitchen.

Voluntarily picking up a trail of discarded socks. Gratefully, folding up a damp towel abandoned on the bathroom floor. Carefully placing a tossed pair of shoes into the closet. This is our life: a mosaic of little things, daily sacrifices in small, quiet pieces.

At its very essence, this Christ-life is about the little things being the greatest things of all. Christ Himself told us: Whoever wants to be great in God’s kingdom must learn to be a servant of all.

And when will I hands-and-mouth-and-feet-remember that this little stuff is the truly noble stuff—the Jesus-stuff? Didn’t He too do great things that seemed so little: washing feet, and gathering children close on lap? Dying on a tree.

In His kingdom heroes live hidden, medal-less lives, lives laid down."

I thought this was so good!  You can read the whole thing at Ann Voskamp’s site:  A Holy Experience, the Making of Heroes .

It’s convicting to me, that’s for sure!   Sometimes we get discouraged doing the mundane, daily things.  Yet that is the stuff greatness is made of.

Lord, help me to be great in Your sight, to serve with a happy, joyful heart in all the routine, ordinary stuff of life.  And may You, the Master Weaver, take all the threads and weave them into a beautiful tapestry–the tapestry of our family life.   Ultimately, may it glorify and point to the One Who gave the materials, the skill, the wisdom, the strength, the grace, the guidance, to the weak individuals that make up the tapestry.

A Tapestry of Divine Love.

A Tapestry of Divine Grace.

A Tapestry of Eternal Life.

A Tapestry of Divine Glory.

A Tapestry of You in our lives.

For Him Who Is My ALL,

Simple Woman’s Daybook 4

September 30th, 2008

Heads UP!   Don’t forget to head over to Homeschool Freebie of the Day to download Kelly Crawford’s book, Getting Your Child to Obey, for free!  But only for today!   You can click on the title to read about it–it’s a beautifully concise book that sums up the best of many methods, imho!

For today, September 30, 2008

Outside my window….  It is sunny but hazy–so far the predicted rain has held off!  The boys are playing in the dirt (of course!) where my husband dug out the foundation for his new office last night!

I am thinking…. how blessed I am with my wonderful family!

From the learning rooms…. we’re still trying to move into a routine.  This week we’re doing Bible and adding the younger girls’ phonics.

I am thankful for…. a wonderful husband and a great marriage of 25 years!

From the kitchen…. ham and cheese muffins, cinnamon flop and muskmelon from our own garden!   Yum!

I am wearing…. true confessions here–my nightgown!  (I had a rough night and slept in!   )

I am reading…. Still reading A Woman’s Call to Prayer, Holy in Christ, and still looking for my Passionate Housewives, Desperate for God book!

I am hoping…. for little Noah Estes to be doing better (see his link on sidebar if you’d like to keep updated and pray for him, too!)

I am creating…. I don’t seem to be creating much lately!   Right now my goal is to create order out of the chaos on my kitchen bar (it is almost done–yay!), my desk, and my sewing room!

I am hearing…. not much!

Around the house…. Littles are outside playing in the trailer of dirt (recess?!)  The two oldest are upstairs reading, the other two are about to do school.

One of my favorite things…. having a special date time all alone with my husband!

A few plans for the rest of the week….  I’m hoping to make a big dent in the messy sewing room, or I won’t be making any Christmas gifts as that’s my only "private" place to sew!    I also want to go over Jessica Letchford’s Christmas Minus Trauma and Drama  to help me not be in a frenzy on December 1!   I have 3 November birthdays and 2 December birthdays, so I need to keep ahead of the game, but so many Christmas organizing ideas are so extensive I get defeated before I start!  Although I’m behind on this one, I don’t feel overwhelmed!

Oh, and we’re helping some dear, dear friends move closer to us!

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you:

Okay, I can’t choose one today!   So you’ll get three!

I like the sweet red "apple" in the back!

Can you find the girl in the tree?!

One of those nice "end of summer" days–bare feet, dirt,

a swing and a homegrown apple!

And don’t forget to go see Fireproof!

More on Fireproof

September 29th, 2008

I’ve always been impressed with the two movies Sherwood Baptist put out, how they were so above board and full of integrity.   No kissing between actors that weren’t really married, for example.   I was glad to find out before I saw this movie, that when Kirk Cameron kisses his wife  in the movie–he kisses his REAL wife!

Here is the interview on Today:   FamilyLife Culture Watch: A FIREPROOF Marriage

Jacque has some more interviews on her website, Walking Therein.

I think it is absolutely amazing the volunteers, the prayer, the city support…..as Erin Bethea said, it’s something they believe in, which brings a whole different element to the movie.   It is powerful!

Again, I hope you can see it!   My children can’t wait for the dvd to come out!

Blessings!
