Did we do it?
Head over to Seven Sisters and find out!
Have a nice weekend!
If you have read my daughters’ blog (Seven Sisters), you might know that we have this crazy idea of sewing 8 jumpers and 4 shirts (for the boys!) before Friday, when we plan to go to the Creation Museum!
I had bought different colors of gingham at least 2 children ago to make matching jumpers. Well, we’ve added a few children and all the children have gotten much taller, so I needed to try to find some matching gingham in the smaller check in similar colors (as we are wearing contrasting colors in bands, ties and bias around the neck and arms!). I spent an hour between Wal-Mart (a bust) and our local sewing center (more expensive, but wider and it was very close in color!). So all we got done last night was washing the fabric!
Today we had a major cutting out session, a hashing out session (as some dear daughters didn’t want the bias tape, others did, then some wanted it smaller, some didn’t…..ai yi yi yi yi!!!), an "I’m getting tired of making all these decisions and figuring out" session, and a few daughters have gotten their jumpers well on their way!
I’m just glad we have 7 sewing machines (although one is at a friend’s house!) and 6 willing seamstresses!
Now if I could just get the dog to quit messing on the floor…..
If you want, you can go to Seven Sisters and vote–do you think we can "git ‘er done"?!
Although not a seamstress on this project, Bekah is a good ripper-outer–even if it was her sister that made the mistake!
Noah had his broviac line removed a few days ago. He has GREAT troubles keeping IVs in and it is traumatic for him. It’s been a rough few days. He must be fever free for 5 days before they can put in a new line, and this is essential for him to receive optimal nourishment. He has already blown several IV lines, they just got another in less than an hour ago. PLEASE PRAY for this one to "hold" and for him to remain fever free (he spiked a fever earlier it sounds like, so the clock starts over ). Also pray that they find what is causing the fever.
The little guy just turned 3 on Monday, and Kate said they were told that he probably wouldn’t live to three.
Mamas, hug your little ones and please say a prayer for Noah and his very tired, emotionally drained mama.
You can click on the button on the side bar "Please Pray for Noah Estes".
Thank you SO much!
Yesterday we went to our state fair–it was our first time!
We got up around 6 a.m. to get chores and everything ready to leave. Our goal was 8, which means we could be on our way by 8:30!
We got going a bit later (around 8:40) due to trying to find the stroller! We were very glad later that we took the extra time to find it! (And Dallas blowing it off with his air compressor–it had collected quite a bit of cobwebs!)
On our way! I slept the first leg! Actually, I think most of us slept a lot on the way down! Just a little north of the state capital, my husband asks if we got the crackers–oops! We were supposed to get them in our little town before taking off! No problem–there’s a Marsh, so in we go! They were even on sale!
The directions worked out pretty well–except we weren’t sure what "gate" to go into! We turned into a lane that we thought was it, and a police officer told us it was the next light! I guess that one was only for those bringing in their animals. Okay, next light, turn right….and we go and go and around and then we can give the tickets to them!
The blue ones are free thanks to the three girls that had state fair projects! The little guys were free because they were cute! No, really, because they were under 5!
So we drive and drive and drive (how can you go so long just going in circles?!) and under a bridge to the horse track–where the parked us on the infield. That is, with about 5000 other cars!
Then we walked (and walked and walked) to find a walk tunnel under the track. We headed for the north side of the fairgrounds first, where there was a pioneer village, a DNR building, a FFA building with lots of activities for the kids (including a miniature golf course!) and the exhibit buildings.
This was one of the 4-H exhibit buildings. The first two floors had exhibits. There is another building to the left of this one, longer, and it had three floors of exhibits!
After seeing the girls’ projects (you’ll have to visit their blog to see how they did! ), we decided to go back the way we came and check out the DNR building. We got to see what happens during a flood to low-lying areas with a model of a reservoir, dam, and then an area without a dam. Little cars and houses floated away! They even sprinkled us with water from the back wall where the workers were!
Next we headed over to Pioneer Village. I think we could have spent all day just there! There were many facets of life "back then" and people dressed in period costume. They were actually building another frame building, just like in the old days–no nailguns! Some men were actually sawing and making their own boards with an old fashioned planer. There was a "kitchen" which was open so you could see into it. No one was working there when we went through. It was interesting, though, to see how many more cupboards we need for all the paraphenelia we think we need these days!
Next we went into a Pioneer Building that had many old farm implements, a beeswax candle booth, men making wooden bowls and chairs, ladies quilting and tatting, even making brooms! There was also a replica of the cabin that once stood on the land where the state fairgrounds are now located. Talk about small!
To give you an idea–there wasn’t much space on either side of this fireplace!
The bed below was across from the "living area". There was a loft over the bed area–the bed is a small double bed and the head of it was on the other wall–now that’s family togetherness! Can you imagine weathering a long winter in a cabin that small? Do you understand the term "cabin fever" a bit better?!
We were walking around looking for The Dazzling Mills Family, who were the main reason we decided to go to the state fair! They were supposed to be roving the fairgrounds—with a place bigger than our small town, just how in the world were we supposed to find them?! We just kept wandering around hoping to see them!
Instead, we found out about a "pig race". We found out where it was going to take place, but had a little time, so we checked out The Stars of Peking acrobats…..or contortionists! It was quite amazing how flexible they are, and how well they could balance. We couldn’t watch for very long–it kind of made our necks hurt!!!
So, on to the pig races! These guys were a hoot! Here is the "pig wrangler", who put on quite a pre-show all by himself!
The announcer (not pictured) would tell jokes and "ham it up", giving the pigs celebrity names like Arnold Schwarzennhogger, Brittany Squeals, Sarah Jessica Porker….you get the idea! I honestly don’t know all the celebrities he was spoofing on, but I’ve heard their names at least to be able to get the joke!
Oh, the pre-show guy would go around and get four ladies’ names, give them pom-poms, then they had to stand in the center and "root" their pig on! (You are just getting a small taste of the piggie humor!)
So here is one set–racing to the finish for the oreo!
Pretty cute, huh!
After the racing, Dallas wanted to talk to someone about windmills, so the girls and I went back to the Pioneer Building to hang out in the shade. Isaiah was already asleep, and Noah fell asleep, too! We let them get a bit of a nap, then we headed back down the street. We decided to go eat at the van. We have a double stroller, but it doesn’t fold up easily. So we took the one I mentioned earlier, and did what we always did in the days before double strollers!
On our way, we often had to get over for the "trams" carrying people–I think they must have gone through every 3 minutes or so! Probably not quite that bad, but they came fairly often!
The parking lot was quite warm, but our van was hotter! Some of us sat in the shade of the van (what little there was!) and a few of us sat in the van, with the windows open for a bit of a cross-breeze!
After lunch, we went back the way we came and decided to make our way around to the other side of the fairgrounds, where the animals were. We went over a covered bridge (well, we went beside it as the trams came through the bridge!). This was the bridge we went under to park when we got to the fairgrounds.
Over the bridge, then you’re going by the midway. No, we didn’t do any rides!
We found the cattle barn–I don’t think we got a picture of it, but it was HUGE! It was as big as our property, which sits on 2 1/4 acres!!!
After going through the cattle building, we saw the sheep building. It also held the goats. Yes, I said building! As in, air conditioned!
It was just as big on either side as the middle shown above!
Here’s the inside.
There was a sheep show in progress.
Then on to the swine building. Only we were on the back side, so we went to what we thought was an entrance. Instead, it was the basement of that building! No piggies, there, but we went down and around and back up and finally to the front of the building! Whew! We just went in, around a little bit, then back out so as not to be in the way.
Remember I said the main reason we went to the state fair was to see the Dazzling Mills Family?
We came out of the swine building, and Susannah and Dallas both saw four people dressed alike sitting across the street…..could it be?
Yes!!! It was the Mills Family!!!
Now, the funny thing is…..another guy was about to do his show–Slackwire Sam (who juggled while on a unicycle while on a…slack wire!). I guess he and the Mills’ were going to do a little pre-show together, and he spots us (remember, we’re all dressed alike!). He asks Mr. Mills who we are! I guess he thought we were another act! (Oh, if only he knew! HaHa!) Mr. Mills comes over and talks to us–I guess he saw us on the other side of the grounds! How we missed him I don’t know!
He said he told Sam we had an act! I said, well, we do sing and play together, but no juggling! We were talking and told him how we had wanted to see them perform but just weren’t in the right place all day! They actually weren’t doing another performance then, but he said they’d do a little bit after Sam’s act for us. So the Lord blessed us with both performances! Sam’s was quite amazing!!!
Here’s a video of him–remember, the guy is crazy! But good!
Here’s the Dazzling Mills Family!
We have a few short videos of them. Here is the first one–Dazzling Mills Family.
And the second one—you’ll have to turn your head towards the end! Jessica forgot that when you turn our camera, it doesn’t adjust for the fact that you are still right-side-up! And of course if we rotate it, then the first part would be sideways! It’s not long, so you shouldn’t get a crick in your neck!
Here’s the second video of The Dazzling Mills Family.
On our way back, we had ice cream–no, we did NOT try for 100 milkshakes here! After all, we were only here one day!
Here we are–the happy family at the end of a long but happy day!
Hope you enjoyed a glimpse of our day at the state fair!
First of all, I want to update on Noah Estes. Many things (as of last evening) had worked out for the trip to the rheumatologist today. I’ve checked the blog and her "tweets" and nothing new yet, but praise the Lord for many of the "mountains" being removed! Please keep them in your prayers, and I prayerfully ask you to consider signing up for updates to their blog so you can continue to pray. (Button on sidebar).
[Editing to add that Kate just posted an update–here’s the link to "Plan Q". God really worked out many things!]
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Today I am thankful that God is in control! With all that I read (and I don’t read a fraction of it all like some do!) and hear of what is going on in the world, it is quite obvious that we are much nearer to Christ’s return than ever! I don’t believe that we will avoid suffering for our faith, but if we sit around and fear and fret and worry (three things Scripture explicitly forbids us to do, by the way!) that will not prepare us in any way. In fact, I am not interested in "preparing to suffer", so to speak.
I am focused on "preparing to meet my Savior"! Whether through death or "in the air", THAT is the most momentous occasion of my life that I focus on. And I am going to sound like a broken record, but it all goes back to—–
Relationships.
Whether you are fearful/fretful/worried about marriage problems, your children, your homeschooling, your extended family, loved ones’ salvation, local/national/world problems or church problems, the anitdote is not to immerse yourself in the latest about the conspiracies going on (they are out there, I acknowledge that) or be well versed in political intrigues (plenty of those, too) or even focusing on whether we’re going through the Tribulation or not, or whether so-and-so has their doctrine lined up or whether you need a degree to make good money (my answer would be no)–a bunch of head knowledge is not going to help any one of those situations.
Immersing yourself in His Love Letter to you, immersing yourself in time with your Beloved Bridegroom Who died for you, communing with Him, loving His presence, spending time in His presence, thirsting mightily for His presence, longing for His presence…..I think you get the idea! THIS is what will bring peace and strength to your heart, a deep calm that nothing, and I mean nothing, can disturb.
Only by spending time with Him will we know His thoughts. And only by spending time with Him will be able to trust Him. With our problems. With our families. With our very lives.
I believe we are not to be looking for the "signs of the times". Or the antichrist. Or whatever else.
We are to be looking for Him. And Him alone.
That doesn’t mean hide our heads in the sand and ignore everything going on around us. But to look for Him in and through all and above it all.
If you are spending more time reading newspapers, listening to talk radio, discussing all the political/spiritual intrigues going on than you are in God’s Word just worshipping and loving Him and letting Him speak to you, then I would suggest you turn that around. There’s nothing wrong with studying His Word and seeing how Scripture is "today’s headlines", but above that you must spend time with Him. Imagine if all you talked about with your husband was what is going on in the world! No real "connecting" time. Wouldn’t do much for your relationship, would it?!
Same with our relationship with the Lord.
"Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing." 2 Timothy 4:8
Do you love His appearing? Do you long for the consummation of the Marriage of the Lamb? Or are you too tied to this world? Are you more concerned with how you will survive than how you will glorify Him? (Josef Tson’s message I mentioned a few weeks ago is a good one to watch if you haven’t already! Click here for that post–if you just want the link to Tson’s video, click here. You’ll have to scroll about half way down the page to find his message.)
Do you really believe God is in control? Do you believe that He has everything in His hands, and that nothing, absolutely nothing, happens without His permission and oversight? That "Surely the wrath of man shall praise Thee: the remainder of wrath shalt Thou restrain." ? (Psalm 76:10)
"He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord." (Psalm 112:7)
What is your heart fixed upon?
Only by spending time with my Savior can I have His peace. "Let not your heart be troubled….Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." John 14:1, 27
I believe that is a command! Who is in control of what our heart meditates upon?!
We are! What we meditate upon shows what we truly delight in.
OUCH!
May we find our delight in Him and His Word to us, and meditate on it . It will strengthen our hearts (Ps. 27:14, Joshua 1:7-9). It will bring true joy (Psalm 16:11). As we delight in His commandments, fear Him and Him alone, He will bless, help fix our hearts on Him and build our trust in Him. (Psalm 112:1,4-5,7)
I leave you with a few thoughts. The first by Ron Auch (of course!):
"The law (teaching) of Thy mouth is better unto me (more precious to me) than thousands of gold and silver." Psalm 119:72
"What would you prefer? Would you prefer an unlimited supply of silver and gold, or access to the presence and words of God? Most of us prove, by our actions, that we prefer silver and gold over God. Our jobs can make tremendous demands on us and yet we sacrifice to keep them….If only we felt like David, that the things of God are more precious than money.
"Living in obedience to His law is what sharpens our spiritual hearing. Not until we love that which proceeds from His mouth more than we love this world, will we develop David’s kind of obedience to Him. That obedience brings us into a communion with Him. That obedience generates His presence."
~The Heart of the King
I believe I’ve quoted this by A.T. Pierson before, but it’s good enough to repeat!
"The peace of God is that eternal calm which, like the cushion of the sea, lies far too deep down to be reached by any external trouble or disturbance; and he who enters into the presence of God, becomes partaker of that undisturbed and undisturbable calm."
May you find that peace by resting in Him.
He is in control!
May you have God’s blessings of peace upon your life as you seek His face!
Jeff and Kate Estes are the parents of sweet Noah (the Noah on the sidebar) who has a mitochondrial disease. He is having a lot of things hit him right now, and they are overwhelmed to say the least. Would you please pray for them all–mom, dad, Noah and all the other children? You can read the latest update (as of August 3rd) here:Exhausted and Overwhelmed
And please comment and let them know you’re praying! Kate is on Twitter and has her "tweets" on the sidebar for any "breaking news" in between posts. If you want to you can sign up for updates to their blog. Noah’s 3rd birthday is on the 10th, and the poor little guy has been hospitalized a lot in the past several weeks.
Thank you for your prayers! We know they make a difference!
Sixteen years ago today God gave us a special gift,
a little girl very much like her mother;
a sweet and "spicey" little girl that would teach us
how to rely on Him for child-training wisdom,
and not the experts!
I am so very grateful He did,
because I have learned how to guide the heart
without sacrificing the relationship,
nor breaking the will
of a Godly strong-willed young woman
who loves her God, her family, her piano
LIFE
with everything she’s got!
I love you, my Spicey-Girl!
HAPPY 16th BIRTHDAY CASSIA!!!

I’ve missed a few Thursdays! But I’m still thankful!
This week, I am especially thankful for the Living Word of God. I am always amazed at how the Word has just what I need at a particular moment, whether I’m dealing with planning homeschooling, character training, world issues…..
Over and over and over again, God’s Living, Breathing Word speaks to my heart in such a way that you would think that that verse or passage had been penned just for me, for that moment!
Sometimes it might be something I’ve read over many times before, but it speaks to me in a different way this time. The Lord is personally involved in my life and speaks to my heart over and over through His Love Letter to me. He gently challenges me, convicts me, affirms me, and guides me, because He cares about every intimate detail of my life!
Whether you are facing illness, uncertainties about a job, homeschool planning, struggles with a child, marriage issues, or maybe you’re concerned for a friend’s struggles–God’s Word holds precious words of promise, comfort, and direction for you. You may have to dig as for hidden treasure–but if you knew that in this Book were hidden the exact words you need to hear at this time, wouldn’t you dig diligently to find them?
"The law (teaching) of Thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver." Psalm 119:72
"I have rejoiced in the way of Thy testimonies, as much as in all riches." Psalm 119:14
"My son, if thou wilt receive My words, and hide My commandments with thee;
So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God."
Proverbs 2:1-5
Search His Love Letter to you for His precious words of comfort, hope and love!
You will be blessed!
Outside my window… it is finally getting warmer! We actually had to take jackets one morning to the fair a few weeks ago! A beautiful summer evening with blue sky, lovely "early evening" sun and things are still.
I am thinking… about three of my girls who are attending a seminar, hoping they are learning lots! (And missing them!)
I am thankful for… having my oldest daughter back home! (And my other driver! )
From the kitchen… we just had taco salad, Dallas and I had blueberry cheesecake for dessert, but the children decided they wanted s’mores!
I am wearing… a yellow blouse with my "Debbie Mumm" sunflower jumper (compliments of Leah!)
I am reading… Slowly working through Solved: The Riddle of Illness by Dr. Stephen Langer (about thyroid–interesting reading!)
I am hoping… for a calmer week–and to pick blueberries at least one day this week!
I am hearing… nothing. Birds chirping. Occasionally Clover barking. Everyone is in the barn!
Around the house… Dallas is in his office, the rest are in the barn doing chores.
One of my favorite things… is watching and listening to my boys play, wrestle and talk!
A few plans for the rest of the week: Take State Fair projects in to the local office tomorrow, go blueberry picking, have a few girls here for two nights while they attend a music clinic "somewhat" near us (if you call an hour away "near"!), get my computer desk organized–I’m planning a whole day to tackle that!
Here is picture thought I am sharing…
"Jewel of the Morning"
As I was eating my breakfast (or, more like it, brunch!) this morning, I looked out over the backyard and saw the "corn fence" behind us. It was just such a serene view, with the sunlight highlighting the corn tops, creating just a bit of haze.
I love this time of year! The craziness of the fair is done
(although we generally enjoy that craziness!),
and the garden isn’t bombarding us yet.
Just a quiet moment on a quiet morning.
Then I look out a different window (our sunroom has ten!),
and see this sweet picture!
After few more minutes, I see that the little cutie patootie
has sweet-talked his sister into a "big one" push!
Ah!
This is why I have lots of children!
This is why I homeschool!
This is why I love life on a mini-farm!
I love these quiet, sweet blessings from the Lord!
