Simple Woman’s Daybook~~May 12, 2009

May 12th, 2009

FOR TODAY… May 12, 2009

Outside my window…  It’s dark!    50ish.  The nights have been cooler, even frosting last night.

I am thinking… that I should be in bed!!!

I am thankful for… my sweet daughters who stayed up late Saturday night to make me a lovely Mother’s Day gift of a new jumper!   And for the sweet notes and cards I got as well as the vase of heavenly smelling lilacs (my favorite!) in my master bath window!   They also cleaned up the sewing room (it is now safe to walk in there!) as well as started weeding the front flower beds.

From the kitchen… just the dishwasher running now!  We had a yummy supper of individual meatloaves, green beans, cheesy potatoes and sweet potato rolls!

I am wearing… a pink blouse with a blue floral jumper.

I am creating… I already "created" it but am now tweaking it–a song I wrote and hope to sing sometime soon.

I am going… nowhere tonight!

I am reading… The Beautiful Fight by Gary Thomas.   I think I’ve found another good author like Ron Auch!

I am hoping… to see my grandmother tomorrow.  She’s 92!  She is probably one of the most ardent pray-ers that prayed for my salvation almost 30 years ago!

I am hearing… the tick of the cuckoo clock in the sunroom and the swish of the dishwasher running.

Around the house… all are asleep!

One of my favorite things… Did I mention how much I love lilacs?!

A few plans for the rest of the week:  The girls and I will sing and play for our local nutrition site tomorrow, then Thursday is Llama Club meeting for the 4-H-ers (and my other driver is away being a mama’s helper!), then hopefully Friday I can start going through stuff for a garage sale.  On Saturday my home-ec club (oops, sorry!  "Extension Homemakers" Club!) is going on our "club trip" to a small town 30 minutes away that has gobs of antique shops.  We’ll meet together for lunch in between our browsing…and I hear tell there’s a wonderful place that sells really good chocolate….I’ll let you know what I think!

Quote of the week…. "Christian family life is a journey of maintaining God-sight and cultivating God’s heart for our spouses, our kids, and our families."  Gary Thomas in The Beautiful Fight , p. 72

Here is picture thought I am sharing:

(shhhh!  I’m snitching one of Susannah’s photos!)

Blessings on your day!

Saturday Psalm and Praise~I Am His and He Is Mine!

May 9th, 2009

I hope everyone isn’t getting tired of me talking about The Heart of the King by Ron Auch!   Again, this book has blessed me in so many ways!  I just finished it today–176 pages, one for each verse.  And I’m going to go through it again!

The reason I love Mr. Auch’s books is that they focus on our relationship with Christ.  Not "doing things for Christ" but "being with Christ".

That is what the Christian life is all about.  That is why He died–to restore that relationship so we could walk and talk with God as Adam did.  That is what He wanted all along–to have fellowship with us!!!!

How it must grieve Him that we want to hand Him a list in prayer, go on and "do things for God" more than we want to just spend time with Him!

Can you imagine handing your husband a "Honey-Do" list, and THAT was the main sum of your relationship with Him?!  It wouldn’t be much of a relationship, would it!!!

Psalm 119:176 says, "I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek Thy servant; for I do not forget Thy commandments."

Some thoughts from The Heart of the King:

"There is a reason why we are called sheep and why Jesus is called the Good Shepherd.   Sheep don’t have a lot of common sense……We need to be led.  we don’t even know enough to stay on the straight and narrow path.  We need a shepherd who will continualy and gently guide us.

"In this verse, David is expressing how we would be naturally lost without a shepherd….He is expressing a complete dependency upon his Shepherd.

"Fortunately for us we have a Good Shepherd.  Jesus, our Good Shepherd, continually, gently, compassionately, corrects us.  How fitting for David to finish this great Psalm with a focus on the One who perpetually seeks us out.

"Our Good Shepherd seeks us out.  This is the One who deserves all our praise.  This is the One to whom we owe our life!"

I am so grateful He does seek us out, especially when I go down the wrong path.  He doesn’t let me go, saying, "Well, she’ll learn her lesson!  I’ve told her and told her."  He gently, compassionately seeks me out.  I might  not listen, but the consequences I may suffer are not a big "I told you so!" from God!  They are the results of the path I’ve chosen.  It grieves His heart that I choose to go away from Him instead of trusting His leading and following.

I’m sure you’ve heard this analogy before, but there is a difference between "driving the sheep" vs. "leading the sheep".  When we drive the sheep, there is fear, trampling, bedlam……when we lead them, it means we’ve developed a relationship with them to where they trust us, and then we just need to "speak the word" and they follow.

Christ is the ultimate Good Shepherd!   He longs to spend time with us, so we can get to know His voice.  Then when He speaks the Word, we just follow.  We can trust our loving Shepherd to guide us in exactly the right pastures for us.   Maybe it looks scarey, maybe it doesn’t look exactly like what we had pictured, but with our hand in His, we trust.   And then we find out that "In His presence in fulness of joy" (Ps. 16:11) and that He has led us "beside still waters" and "in green pastures".   Sweet, nourishing pastures!

From The Seven Spirits of God by Ron Auch:

"Human nature hasn’t changed much during the intervening centuries.  As Jesus calls us to surrender our dreams of an earthly kingdom, we, too, feel uncomfortable.  Yet He continues to beckon uncompromisingly, instructing His followers to die to self, to all their selfish aspirations for life.  He wants us to be able to say with Paul, ‘I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me’ (Gal. 2:20).  He doesn’t want to be number one on our list; He wants to be our entire list.   Jesus doesn’t want to be our number one love; He wants to be the only love of our lives.  He becomes this through our own willful dying to self, surrendering control of our lives and letting Him establish His character in us.  That is what the fullness of the Spirit means:  demonstrating all seven qualities of God by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit."  (pp. 21-22)

This is one of my favorite hymns, I Am His and He Is Mine.

Loved with everlasting love,
Led by grace that love to know;
Spirit, breathing from above,
Thou hast taught me it is so!

Oh, this full and perfect peace!
Oh, this transport all divine!
In a love which cannot cease,
I am His, and He is mine.

In a Love, which cannot cease,
I am His, and He is mine.

Heaven above is softer blue,
Earth around is sweeter green–
Something lives in every hue,
Christless eyes have never seen.

Birds with gladder songs o’erflow,
Flowers with deeper beauties shine,
Since I know, as now I know,
I am His, and He is mine.

Since I know, as now I know,
I am His, and He is mine.

Things that once were wild alarms
Cannot now disturb my rest,
Closed in everlasting arms,
Pillowed on the loving breast.

Oh, to lie forever here,
Doubt and care and self resign,
While He whispers in my ear–
I am His, and He is mine.

While He whispers in my ear–
I am His, and He is mine.

His forever only His;
Who the Lord and me shall part?
Ah, with what a rest of bliss,
Christ can fill the loving heart!

Heaven and earth may fade and flee,
Firstborn light in gloom decline;
But while God and I shall be,
I am His, and He is mine.

But while God and I shall be,
I am His, and He is mine.

You can rejoice that He is yours!

But the question is…..
Are you totally His?

Thankful Thursday~~on Friday!

May 8th, 2009

I didn’t get to post yesterday, because….well….of the reason I’m thankful!

I was thinking about a few different things to post about yesterday morning.  I got a call at noon that my friend who is due in a few weeks needed to get things going for her labor due to having high blood pressure.  Of course I had been praying for her, that all would go well.  They lost their last baby, and I can so feel for them as we lost a baby boy at 38 weeks 18+ years ago.  So I knew how very special this baby was to them (not that they all are, but I’m sure you understand what I mean!).    I wanted all to go well for her!

So I headed up to the birth center, and bless her heart, nothing much was happening!   Later in the evening, she had to take the "wonderful" castor oil cure!  (bleh!)   She was such a trooper!  That started things to get a little more serious, but at 10:30 ish p.m. she was still not in a regular pattern.

Well, at 12:15 a.m., baby was here!   God blessed her with a fairly quick delivery, and really, much easier than one might expect for natural induction!  (I’m sure my friend might say differently!   )

I didn’t ask permission to post her picture, but take my word for it–she’s beautiful!

So, for today, I am VERY grateful to God for helping my friend through her labor and delivery and for protecting her sweet little baby girl!   Mama, Daddy and big sister were doing well, too, when I left early this morning!

Thank You, Heavenly Father, for Your precious care and help, and for blessing my dear friends with their beautiful baby girl!

What are you thankful for today?   Please post a comment and let me know!

Blessings!

Bible Time~Passing on a Thirst for His Presence

May 5th, 2009

I had been asked if I’d share what I am planning for our Bible Time (that I mentioned yesterday).  Of course, I can’t do that in just a few sentences!    I have to share my heart about it!

I have been wanting to revamp some things with our Bible time.  I didn’t want it to be soooo boring the younger children were dreading it.  Neither did I want to cater to them with fun and games time.  And I wanted it to be not just focusing on the Word of God, important as that is, but on the God of the Word.  If you’ve been around my blog much at all, you know that I "preach" about relationships.   A LOT!

I cannot save my children.   I cannot impart to them my salvation.   I can, however, lead them to the Living Water.   And then make them thirsty enough for it they just have to take a drink!

How do I do that?

By sharing the overflow of my relationship with Christ!   As I spend time in His presence, I develop His character, His heart for others…..my constant prayer is that He would so permeate my life that I would anoint all I touch with Him.   Just Him.

So I wanted our Bible Time to reflect that.  I had been asking God to please show me the "pattern on the Mount" so to speak, as to what He wanted for our family.   My only hesitation in sharing this is that someone may take it lock, stock and barrel without praying about it and then it will become a tool that doesn’t fit well in their hand!   Please bathe in prayer and ask God what He wants for you.  If He led you here and you feel this is your answer, that’s fine.  I just know how prone I am to try to copy something thinking that’s from the Lord when I really didn’t seek His mind on it at all!

This came from…you guessed it!   A Ron Auch book!  Swept Away by His Presence is another awesome book, and in the later chapters he talks about how he has helped churches start what he calls "Morning Manna" prayer meetings.  I’m not going to give all the specifics here, but I will share what I gleaned from it and the tweaks I’ve made for us.

1. Prayer

We first pray for God to be with us, to guide us and protect our time together.

2. Hymns

We do this already, but I am changing it a little.  Our 7 daughters each have a laundry day (obviously a few double up to get it done during the week!), so on their laundry day, they get to choose a hymn to sing.  Noah picks one on Monday, when Cassia does his laundry.   So we usually are picking two hymns to sing.  Yes, ALL the verses!  We also sing through the hymnbook.  I will go to the piano and pick out the tune if we don’t know it, but we usually sing a cappella.  (I’m not a good enough pianist to play AND sing!)

3. Bible and Confession

I plan for us to read a Psalm together, share from that and our personal quiet times what the Lord is showing us, then read the chapter of Proverbs for that day.  After that, we will pray and confess whatever the Lord has prompted us that needs to be confessed and/or for His help in doing what He is calling us to do from what we read.

4. Intercession

Here we will pray for the needs of others as well as make petition for our needs.  We will follow the guidelines Mr. Auch created for the churches he does this for.

Monday–government–city, state, nation

Tuesday–families

Wednesday–World Missions

Thursday–Lost souls, revival

Friday–the Sunday service

5. Praying in the Harvest

This is also from his guidelines, which he got the idea from Rev. Larry Lea.  It is based on Isaiah 43:4-6.  Basically it is facing the different directions and praying for the needs of the community in that direction as well as salvation for lost souls.

6. Thanksgiving and Worship

Here we will sing our "Hymn of the Week"–a hymn I pick that we sing every day, so that we get more familiar with it.  We will also share thanksgiving to God and praises here, as well as worship Him just for Who He is.

We’ll have a short break so they littles can stretch and get their Grapevine Studies notebooks, then we will do a short lesson on that and end with our Scripture memory.

I may change some things around, but that is my ideal for now.  I think it will take about an hour, with the break and allowing some extra time in case one segment takes more than its allotted time!   Which would be wonderful, by the way!

My breakdown, if you’re interested, is 15 minutes for prayer and hymns; 10 minutes to read the Bible and share and have time of confession; 10 minutes for intercession/petition; 5 minutes for praying in the harvest; 5-10 minutes for worship;  then 10 minutes or so for Grapevine and Scripture memory.

This will first be tried tomorrow morning, so maybe I’ll let you know how it goes!  I have no doubt it will take longer to start with, that the enemy will fight it, and we may spend as much time getting the little guys to learn to sit still  but it will be worth the effort!

I am convinced more and more that time in His presence is THE most important thing I can be doing–both for myself and with my children.

No other way will we all learn to "Be still and know that I am God".  In reading Taught by the Spirit, (yes, another Ron Auch book!) I am learning that the battle is HIS.  The battle for our nation.  Our churches.  Our marriages.   Our children.   Read about King Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20:12-17.    What did God tell Him?

"Ye shall not need to fight in this battle:  set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem:  fear not, nor be dismayed;  tomorrow go out against them:  for the Lord wil be with you."

And what was Jehoshaphat’s response?  Worship!!!  "And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground:  and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jersualem fell before the Lord, worshiping the Lord."

And then see what he did to "prepare for battle"!   Verses 21-22:

"And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the Lord; for his mercy endureth forever.  And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten."

"Worship is powerful, it confuses the enemy, and nowhere has that fact been demonstrated more clearly than in that battle…..True worship will so confuse the enemy that he will destroy his own followers." (Taught by the Spirit, p. 148)

"In our spiritual warfare, God uses our worship to accomplish very special purposes.  He uses worship to get His work done in the world.  Prayer, on the other hand, is what God uses to get work done in us. Worship changes the world.  Prayer changes us.  But in order for this to happen, the garment of praise must go on after the sackcloth.  If we reverse that, putting on the garment of praise first, we never bring ourselves to repentance, we ensnare ourselves in a worship of worship, rather than a worship of the one true God."   (Taught by the Spirit, p. 148)

Mr. Auch contends that the greatest way to defeat our enemy is to become more like Christ, because that is the opposite of the devil.  And we become more like Christ by spending time in His presence.

I feel that if I can help my children to grasp that, it will be more powerful than memorizing whole books of the Bible, than knowing theology forwards and backwards, or than the most eloquent singing and preaching they could do.   Time with Him must come first, or all our Bible reading, memorization, study, etc. will be in vain.  If it doesn’t make me more like Christ, it is all in vain.

Yes, I know, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink!"

But you know the rest!

You can salt his oats!

This is how I plan to "salt the oats" and make my children thirsty for a drink from the Living Well that never runs dry.   The Living Water that is the only kind that will truly satisfy!

I tell people "You must be what you want your children to become."  Too many times we think the right Bible curriculum or class or whatever will do it.  No, it is a relationship, and it must come from us first.  As they see us drinking deeply and often from that well of Living Water, and then our lives overflowing with the fruits of the Spirit from being in His presence, they will want that same love…..joy…..peace—who doesn’t want peace in this troubled world?  It doesn’t come from changing our circumstances but from changing us!   Having His presence within brings peace in the most turbulent storm!

Then we and our children can "Be still and know that He is God".  Then we can "stand ye still" for "the battle is the Lord’s"!

I hope that encourages you to seek Him and His "pattern on the mount" for your Bible Time.   As for me and my family, we don’t just want to know about God–

We want to know God!

May He guide you as you seek His face!

Simple Woman’s Daybook~~4 May, 2009

May 4th, 2009

FOR TODAY…. May 4, 2009

Outside my window…  It’s a beautiful day!  Well, it has gotten a bit cloudy, but it’s mostly sunny and in the 60s with a nice breeze.

I am thinking… I am not ready for the start of 4-H fair season–sort of "started" on Saturday when they weighed and tagged the goat wethers!   Two months from today we check in the animals!!!

I am thankful for… His mercies which are new every morning!

From the learning rooms… Ah, spring fever and Mondays are hard!  The usual (math, language arts, copywork) and I’m excited to try a new approach to our Bible time–but that will probably be tomorrow!

From the kitchen… Susannah’s Soup, Broccoli-Cauliflower Casserole, Sweet Potato Rolls

I am wearing… one of my white polo shirts with cutwork on the collar and sleeves and my green floral jumper.

I am creating… some new ideas for practice for my piano students.

I am going… to see my grandma later today, I hope.

I am reading… Actually, just finished another book by Ron Auch!  Swept Away By His Presence is another gem!   I just can’t highly recommend his books enough!   It was through this book I got my ideas for our Bible time.   I also just found Gary Thomas, another great writer!  I’m reading The Beautiful Fight right now.

I am hoping… that my dear friend who is expecting any day has a wonderful delivery–and that I can make it there!

I am hearing…  The Vivaldi Double (Concerto for two cellos–or celli!) in the living room.  Susannah and Cassia always practice it together when they get a chance!  Now for one of our pianists to be able to play the accompaniment!

Around the house… Jessica and the boys are out loading wood on the trailer, Cassia is practicing cello, Bekah is finishing some chores, Charissa went outside (I’m not sure if it was to help or not…), not sure about the others!

One of my favorite things… sweet little dark purple violets!

A few plans for the rest of the week:

Teach lessons, take Jessica to be a helper at one of my friends’ house for a week and a half, get my flower beds weeded and ready to buy flowers on Saturday.

Here is picture thought I am sharing…

Have a blessed day!

Thankful Thursday

April 30th, 2009

Five years ago yesterday, our sixth daughter, Bekah, fell from our barn loft.  10 feet onto the concrete floor below.  At first we weren’t sure how far she had fallen, since no one had actually seen the fall.  Anna found her, and when she later showed us where Bekah landed, we realized what a miracle it was that our little girl was still with us!

She missed a short wall, rabbit cages, rabbit paraphenilia (buckets, scales, feed, etc.).  She still ended up with a severe head injury, which got her lifeflighted to a hospital an hour away.  I was just 12 weeks along with our now 4 year old son.  It was a frightening time, yet God’s peace and care were there.

The hospital was in the city our church meets in, so many of our church family were there to support us and help in any way they could.

Bekah didn’t speak much at all for two days.  I wondered, since she had just turned 5, if there would be any long term damage that might show up as she got older.

Today, I am thankful and very happy to say that she is fine!  No repercussions at all from her accident!  Praise God!

We also had no insurance at the time.  The Lord provided through the generosity of many, many of His people!  We were able to pay all the bills off within 2 months time!!!

So today, I am very thankful for Bekah, for her complete recovery, and for His provision!

Lessons Learned from the High Places

April 28th, 2009

Have you ever read Hinds’ Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard?   It is probably one of my absolutely favorite of all Christian books!

I first read it when I was in Strasbourg, France, for a study-abroad program while in college.  That was the year God totally turned my world around.  I had been a Christian for 3 years, but only started growing in the year leading up to this year abroad.  I didn’t do as well academically, but spiritually I soared.  Not without some pain, however!

God had to show me that all my grand plans for my life were not His.  That I was going to change from foreign languages (and therefore not be an interpreter) to music.   That I was not going to finish college (boy, did THAT raise lots of eyebrows!)   And at that point, I didn’t even have a boyfriend, so it wasn’t like I thought I was going to get married and have 9 kids or something like that!

I am so glad I read this book early in my Christian walk.  If you haven’t read it, it really focuses on the relationship between a believer and her (or his!) Lord.  As a young girl of 19, who had already broken off a serious relationship and was willing to let the Lord be everything to her, I was still scared.   This was new territory!  What if God called me to be single?  What if I never had another boyfriend– never got married?  Could He really meet the deepest needs of my heart?   Remember, this was back in the dinosaur ages before "courtship" materials abounded at every Christian bookstore!  Homeschooling was in its gestation for the most part, and there was little out there to support a baby Christian like me in this new territory.  At least as far as I knew then.

A friend on the IU Study program loaned me her copy, and I read it.  And reread it.  When I came home for Christmas, I bought my own copy!  And marked it!  (I’m trying to find my original copy, but as many things in this house, no one seems to have seen it……it’s here, somewhere!)   It went back to Strasbourg with me.  It became my constant companion.  I memorized the beautiful poetic renditions Miss Hurnard did of verses in Song of Solomon.

I have certainly fallen into my share of doing things out of duty or some sort of "religious" reason over the almost 30 years of being a Christian!   But God lovingly brings me back to my "first love"…..I think of my times at the ruins of Heidelberg Castle in Germany.  I meditated a lot on those poems and the message of the book.  In Switzerland it also accompanied me (which is neat, since Miss Hurnard originally received from the Lord much of the material for the book in Switzerland!).  I didn’t get to roam about much in Switzerland (ah, the life of a poor college girl!), but I still enjoyed what I did get to see and decided it must be the most beautiful place in the world to live!    Since I live in a rather flat area, and hadn’t even seen mountains in my own country yet, the Alps hold a special place in my heart!

It is probably the only book I own, other than the Bibles I had at the time, that travelled all over Europe with me!

In reading several books by Ron Auch, I was reminded of Hinds’ Feet.   Mr. Auch’s books focus on…you guessed it!  Our relationship with Christ!   He has a ministry, Pray-Tell Ministries, but his thrust isn’t to get you to pray a certain way or even pray more.  He knows and teaches that we must deepen our relationship with God–we must want and desire HIM above all else–or prayer is just another religious "thing to do".

I don’t want a religion–things to do.

I want a relationship–a faith–something to be!

It becomes a part of you.  But only as we spend time in His presence!   The marriage relationship is a beautiful picture of the relationship we are to have with our Heavenly Bridegroom.  It’s amazing that a few years ago, I happened to be meditating on that, and thought, "If ALL of marriage is a picture of our relationship to Christ, then what part does physical intimacy portray?"   I don’t think God just gave that part as a nice extra to our earthly relationship, with no spiritual correlation!   Our world has so degraded the intimate part of marriage, that we almost cringe to think that way.  Yet I truly believe that every part of marriage as God intended has something to show us.

God showed me it is prayer.  Not the sit down and give Him my list of things to do, like a "Honey-Do" list prayer, but worship.  Just adoring Him.  Wanting Him.  Needing Him.  Loving Him.

Amazingly, Ron Auch said the same thing in his books!   So, I’m not the only nutcase out there!

I have just finished reading three of his books:  When He Appears, He Hears Your Prayers, and Prayer Can Change Your Marriage.  I’ve also read parts of the book I got for Dallas, Unshakable Man.   I highly recommend ALL of them!  Even the one for men has things we women can learn from!  Just don’t highlight anything in there trying to change your husband!  You’d be missing the point of the book!

One of Ron’s premises is that prayer isn’t to change our circumstances or those around us, as if we were using God to manipulate things to our liking.  It is to change us.   It is then through our changed lives, shining with His Shekinah Glory as Moses’ face did, that makes others thirsty for Him.

If the salt has lost its savor……and what is happening to Christians today?  We are being trampled!

That’s why I wrote last week that getting involved politically, getting angry, and whatever other "action" we want to take will be in vain if we don’t start at the right place–

Getting back to our trysting place with our Heavenly Bridegroom and Lover of Our Soul.

Mr. Auch pointed out that a woman draws her security from her husband’s walk with the Lord.  If he is not seeking God, she will become fearful and try to control things so she can have that security.  (This is not what she should do, mind you!).   In the same way, when the Church stops spending time in her Savior’s presence, she becomes militant.  Trying to change and control things her way.

Hmmmm…..

When we get back to our relationship, God can change things.  He can change us.  He can give us courage to face things that before would frighten us.  Because as you spend time in His presence, you get to know Him.  You know His character (and start changing to be more like Him), so you can trust Him.

Another profound thought Mr. Auch brought out is that we can be right in the center of God’s will with our prayers, but if our motives are self-centered, God very likely will withhold the answer because our motives are not pure.  He gave the example of a wife who marries a man just for the "goodies" he will provide.  A man desires to be a good provider, but if he senses his wife is just "using" him to get things, he may very well withhold the very things he desires to give her because he first wants her to want him.

Prayer has taken on a whole new meaning for me!   My husband and I both had been discussing how we felt more inadequate to pray than ever.   As you can see from "books I’m reading" and what I’ve mentioned in the past, I have been reading lots of books on prayer!  And they are helpful….to a degree.  I knew I didn’t want some "formula praying" book.  I have nothing against using books that take Scriptures and create prayers from them.   They can be from the heart as well as my own words.  BUT–what was missing was the time spent with Him just to be with Him.

Not that I’m not going to intercede or confess or petition Him during these times together.  But the bulk of my time should be in worship.  Then intercession.  Mr. Auch talks of how you could pray for 30 minutes for others–not so hard if you spend 5 minutes praying for 6 people you know!    I love that his books give you more about the relationship and why it is so important to build that before he gets to any "how-to".  In fact, he doesn’t want it to be a "how-to" book.  He tells you if you skipped to that chapter to go back and read the others first!   Otherwise, you will turn this into a method as we are so prone to do, whether in our homeschooling, marriages, parenting, churches…..

I have said before that God has had me in the school of relationships.  Back in 1995, He started showing me that I didn’t have what I call "true heart submission".  My motives were not always pure.   I wanted my husband to change into my idea of what a spiritual leader should be!   (Isn’t that kind of like trying to make God be the kind of god you’d like Him to be?!)   I thought I was doing pretty well, reading books like "Keep a Quiet Heart" by Elisabeth Elliot (highly recommended, by the way!).  Then in 1997, at a homeschool conference, a speaker read Debi Pearl’s article "Carnal Husbands, Cranky Wives, and Cantankerous Kids".   Surgery time!   I got a copy of that article and read it daily for months!  Evaluating my "true heart submission" to my husband AND my Savior!

Again, I thought I was doing pretty well (let anyone that stands take heed……) when in 1999 I attended a Nancy Leigh DeMoss seminar, "Lies Women Believe and the Truth that Sets Them Free".  OUCH!  And to top it all off, I received her little booklet "A Biblical Portrait of Womanhood" and discovered that out of thet 32 statements in the second half of the booklet, I only passed FIVE!

More surgery!

In 2000 I found Laine of "Laine’s Letters".    Now THERE is a woman totally in love with her Lord!  It’s infectious!  Makes you want to get up at 4 a.m., too!     Well, I’m trying for 5:30 for now!    Jesus working in her life changed her priorities, her marriage, her parenting, her homeschooling…..and now she is a well overflowing with the Living Water touching lives all around the world through her "letters"!  They have helped me keep that fire burning in my heart.

Through the past several years, there have been books here and there, but not as life-changing as the ones I mentioned.  Until now.

As I read these books (Ron Auch’s), I immediately thought of Hinds’ Feet on High Places!   If we have no relationship in a marriage, do we really have a marriage?  If we have no relationship with our Savior—do we really have salvation?  Do we really understand all He died to give us?  If we are only counting on Heaven and a little answered prayer here and there, we are SO missing out!

The enemy’s biggest tactic that works to get Christians ineffective is to fight him vs. pursuing Christ.  (from Mr. Auch).   I wholeheartedly agree!  I would venture to say that most if not all problems in our churches today, in our homes today, in our marriages, in our lives–boils down to not spending time with Him.

He wants to change the pray-er more than anything.  Because it’s as others see Jesus in us that they will become thirsty for a drink of the Living Water than only He can supply.   We don’t need to seek answers to our problems–

We need to seek HIM!

Here are some gems to whet your appetite for these books! (And more importantly, for a living love relationship with the Savior!)

"When the bride longs for the king, she is most beautiful.  However, if a bride is in love with herself and infatuated with her own beauty, she is no longer attractive."  When He Appears, p. 122

"Often the Lord refers to the fact that His hand is not short.  In other words, God can reach us with all of our needs.  Do not worry about His hands.  Do not worry about your needs.  Never let the bulk of your prayer life center around the cares of this life.  The Lord’s hand is not shortened. He can reach you with your needs no matter where you are.  Seek His face.

"The bride was being taken through the process of giving up more and more of her life.  She was being taught that seeking the face of her love would ultimately meet all the needs of her life."  When He Appears, p. 72

"This is why Jesus gives all His attention to the Church:  if the Church was fully developed and fully mature, then the whole world would be jealous of the relationship we have with God.  When our families are fully developed in the things of God, they will become a very powerful and effective evangelistic tool because this world has sought every means to save their families.  The world has tried everything from psychology to mysticism, and none of it has worked.   In fact, things are only growing worse.  And only the church has the answer:  a relationship with Jesus Christ.  The world should be literally breaking down the doors of the church saying, ‘We’ve noticed that your families have what we seek.’  If we would give ourselves to the developing of our families, it would be a tremendous force for completing the Great Commission.

"We have a responsibility to God, to our families, and to the world to reflect the glory of Jesus Christ."  Prayer Can Change Your Marriage, pp. 110-111

"It is only from a lack of prayer that you see through man’s eyes rather than God’s.  When you begin praying for someone, in this case your mate, you start seeing that person the way God does.  You start to love your spouse as God does:  for who that person is, rather than for what he or she does.  Hope does not disappoint us because God’s love is poured out in our hearts  Prayer changes the pray-er.  It takes the pray-er from brotherly love (called ‘phileo’ in Greek) to godly love (the Greek ‘agape’)….God wants us to love others the way He loves us. That can only happen when we develop His character in us, and that requires time in His presence.

"But you can’t pray for this ‘agape’ love.  It only comes as a result of being with God."  Prayer Can Change Your Marriage, p. 105

"If I regularly spend time in God’s presence, I won’t be able to help loving everyone, even the most unlovely person.  But if I leave God’s presence for even a small march of days or weeks, I will love only conditionally.  If someone meets a certain criteria, I will love that person to pieces.  But if they don’t measure up, I won’t, all because I haven’t been in God’s presence.

"That’s why I said earlier that God is using your present situation, no matter how bad it is, to develop His character in you, if you will just let it drive you to prayer.  If it doesn’t drive you to prayer, then things will probably never change for you.  You will have to live with those same problems every day for the rest of your life here on earth.

"All this talk about praying for our spouses may make them seem bad, but remember that God uses what naturally interests us (like our mate, family) to get us to pray so that He can supernaturally change us. The change must happen in us first.  God has to first get me to the place where I can love others the way He loves me.  Then He can begin to work through my prayers for them and begin to change my spouse."  Prayer Can Change Your Marriage, p. 106

"So when we face tribulation, we go to prayer.  Prayer causes us to spend time in God’s presence, and that causes us to become like Him in character, which in turn causes us to have great hope in even the most devastating situation."  Prayer Can Change Your Marriage, p. 107

"’Test me and know my anxious thoughts.’  (Ps. 139:23)  The word ‘thoughts’ in this verse means ‘desires’.  The idea behind this is that anything that is really a desire of our heart, will occupy our thoughts.  So David is saying in essence, ‘Test me by examining what actually occupies my thoughts.’"  Unshakable Man, p. 104

"Preparing your heart for prayer can be summed up in one word:  surrender.  Surrender your heart to Christ.  Give Him your will.  Give Him your plans. Give Him your talents.  Give Him your heart."   Unshakable Man, p. 108

"Anything we love, we long to be with."  The Heart of the King,  on Ps. 119:165

I think you get the picture!  Oh, to love Him, spend time with Him and become like Him!!!  "As for me, I will behold Thy face in righteousness:  I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness."   Psalm 17:15

I have always loved hills and mountains, especially since reading Hinds’ Feet.  I envision being there with my Lord, receiving His love, being filled with Him, so permeated with His presence that I anoint all I touch in my day.  Too often I rush off into the day without that symbolic "trysting on the mountain" first.  I must be filled first to be able to love others as my Savior does.

"The High Places, " answered the Shepherd, "are the starting places for the journey down to the lowest place in the world.  When you have hinds’ feet and can go ‘leaping on the mountains and skipping on the hills,’ you will be able, as I am, to run down from the heights in gladdest self-giving and then go up to the mountains again.  You will be able to mount to the High Places swifter than eagles, for it is only up on the High Places of Love that anyone can receive the power to pour themselves down in an utter abandonment of self-giving."

Jesus came to serve.  To be our example.  This is what we are created for–to give–to serve–to love.  But we can only do it in His strength!

One of my favorite poems from Hinds’ Feet is The Water Song.

Come, oh come!  Let us away–

Lower, lower every day,

Oh, what joy it is to race

Down to find the lowest place.

This the dearest law we know–

"It is happy to go low."

Sweetest urge and sweetest will,

"Let us go down lower still."

Hear the summons night and day

Calling us to come away.

From the heights we leap and flow

To the valleys down below.

Always answering to the call,

To the lowest place of all.

Sweetest urge and sweetest pain,

To go low and rise again."

This was my dearest treasure from the Lord last weekend–a beautiful little waterfall that flowed across the trail.  I have a picture on my phone of where it leaps from a precipice and flows into a creek.  If I can figure out how to get it off my phone, I’ll post it later!

It just flows out of the rock–from under the ground.

And then on down the hill….

Here I am standing right in the middle of the stream and right in the middle of the trail!

And here you can hear (and see)  "The Water Song"–just a 48 second video of the little waterfall!

I pray you will fill yourself up with Him today…..and every day.

Simple Woman’s Daybook–27 April, 2009

April 27th, 2009

For today, 27 April, 2009…..

Outside my window….. 71 degrees already at 9:30!   A beautiful, breezy day!  The trees are greening up and the lilacs are giving us a hint of what’s to come!

I am thinking…. how wonderful my walk was this morning!   Saw some beautiful little yellow violets!

From the learning rooms…. the usual fare, and going to try to get back on track with our Grapevine studies (OT Overview)–sadly has been off track since the whooping cough hit!

I am thankful for….. God’s beauty and being able to enjoy some different scenery last weekend at a state park while camping, especially finding a sweet little waterfall in an out-of-the-way place.

From the kitchen…. Chile Corn Dogs and the rest of the menu is undecided….maybe macaroni salad…..

I am wearing…. my Debbie Mumm jumper Leah made me, blue basket-weave background with sunflowers, and a white cutwork shirt.

I am reading…. Hinds’ Feet on High Places (for the umpteenth time!), and finishing books by Ron Auch.  I highly, highly recommend his books!  (More on that later this week!  Stay tuned!   )

I am hoping… that they aren’t burning off the meadow where I like to walk.  It belongs to the town, where they have their sewage treatment plant, and it’s always a study in different grasses and flowers!   I would miss my favorite "friends" if they decide to burn it off…..

I am creating…. this week…..not sure how much might get done, but I’d like to start work on some new jumpers!

I am praying…. for all Christians to have a deeper, more intimate relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Around the house…. some are finishing outside chores, some are finishing inside chores, the boys are watching the tractor (or "brrrm brrrm", as Isaiah calls it!) as the farmer who owns the fields around us is disking.

One of my favorite things…. is meeting with my Lord in a special trysting place.

A few plans for the rest of the week….. finish sorting my mom’s stuff for a garage sale, unearth part of the sewing room (it’s gotten waaaaay worse since the picture I posted after Christmas!!!) and help make meals for a friend’s family for when she is gone for 2 weeks.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you….

Have a Blessed Day!

Thankful Thursday

April 23rd, 2009

I know there might already be someone with a theme like this, but I decided to start one for myself!

It is soooooo easy to get our eyes off what’s right and onto what’s wrong in our daily lives, our families, our city, country, the world…….and there’s plenty wrong!   Remember this quote by Abraham Lincoln?  "If you look for the bad in people, you will surely find it."   Proverbs 11:27 has the opposite:  "He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour:  but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him."   Umm….I think I would rather diligently seek the good and procure favor rather than mischief and then get what I was looking for!!!!

So, want to join me?   Here’s my button:

If you don’t know how to save it, just right click, choose "save picture as" and then choose where you want to save it (usually I save mine in My Pictures).   Then please either link back here by adding the web url to the button or somewhere in your post.   And don’t forget to sign Mr. Linky so I and others can be encouraged by your thankful posts!   You can leave a comment, too, if you like!

So, what am I thankful for this Thursday?

My wonderful church family.   We have been so blessed to fellowship with like-minded believers for 7 years now.  We drive 1 hour 15 minutes one way, but it is worth every bit of it.  These brothers and sisters in Christ really pray for you.   And they are so generous!  When you see the financial statements once a year, a good portion of the money goes to needs in the body.   We meet at a nursing home, and they started meeting there for a free place to have church.  Over the years, they’ve realized that that is the ministry God has for our church, as we can bring some of the residents down for our service.  Some of them are not altogether "with it" mentally, but we know their spirits are still being ministered to.  They ask for prayer requests of the residents that attend and pray for them.

In spite of having land to build on, they feel that our ministry as a church is right where we are.

We get down on our knees and pray for our nation every Sunday.  And usually, that means we’re praying for ourselves–to examine our own lives and be the salt as God intended.

When my husband had his serious accident 4 1/2 years ago, he ended up in one of the hospitals in the city where church meets.   The night of his accident, fully half our church was represented by one or both spouses, and many stayed way late into the night until they got word he was stable.   Our pastor stayed with me until Dallas was in a room at ICU, which was after midnight.

They sat in the ICU lounge with me.  They brought me food and made sure I was not on my feet too much (I was 8 1/2 months pregnant and had had contractions the night of the accident).  They sent meals to my girls, drove them all the way to our home as well as drove there to pick up clothes and things for me.   One lady did my laundry.  Another brought me breakfast and fellowship many mornings.  Different ones signed up to bring us nice dinners when Dallas was doing a bit better.

That is just one glimpse!

We live farther away, yet they will find ways to let you know they care.

I am so grateful to the Lord for bringing us to this fellowship.   And I’m grateful to my wonderful husband, who usually hates to drive so much, for being willing to go there!    It was his choice, ultimately, and he hasn’t regretted it a bit!

The sermons are from the heart, and our pastor truly seeks God’s will and not just a nice fluffy "feel-good" sermon.  I am totally amazed how he will often preach on the very thing God is showing me that week!  Just last Sunday, I kept telling my husband, "He’s been reading my book!"  (I had been reading Ron Auch’s book When He Appears, which I highly recommend!)   How wonderful to have a pastor who really seeks God’s heart, listens to Him and isn’t afraid to preach what he’s  heard!

Much to be grateful for!  And if you’re reading this, my Keefer Creek family, I love you all!

So what are you thankful for?

Walking on Water

April 21st, 2009

I read this yesterday, from Ron Auch’s book, The Heart of the King.  This is a devotional on Psalm 119, with one page per verse.   This particular quote is from verse 153.

153.  Look upon my suffering and deliver me, for I have not forgotten your law.

In this verse, David is seeking deliverance.  He is using his remembrance (practice) of God’s law as his premise for asking for deliverance. Obedience is a symbol of love.  Our love for God is directly related to our obedience to Him.  If a person declares his love to God but does not follow God’s law, his declaration of love is considered false by God.  We read of this in Ezekiel 33:31, "My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to listen to your words, but they DO NOT PUT THEM INTO PRACTICE.  With their mouths they express devotion, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain."  Devotion is measured by our obedience to God, not by our statement of love.  It is one thing to tell God how much we love Him; it is quite another thing to live in obedience to Him.  Obedience is the measure of love.

In Psalm 34:4 we read, "I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears."  Deliverance comes through seeking God, not necessarily from seeking deliverance.  We find God in our obedience to Him.  Therefore, if we are truly seeking God, we will live in obedience.  David is praying, "Deliver me on the basis of my obedience, which signifies my love for You."  The presence of God is our deliverance.

The New Testament puts it this way, "God is love" (I John 4:8).  Later in that same chapter John says, "But perfect love drives out fear" (I John 4:18).  Perfect love (God) is what delivers us.  it is our love relationship with God that delivers us from fear as well as from suffering.  If we live in fear, it’s because our love relationsip with God is not what it should be.  We are not spending adequate time in His presence.

This is quite powerful!   "He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me:  and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him."  John 14:21

We need to be measuring our love by HIS standards, and not just what we say or think!

Isn’t it that way with everything about our relationship with Him?

A few days ago I read verse 151–"Yet You are near, O Lord, and all Your commands are true."

Just a few thoughts from that page:

When the wicked seem to be overwhelming us, the presence of God becomes all that much more powerful……We can put our trust in God’s plan.

A command is an uttered expression of God’s will, which is to be obeyed.  When we obey His commands, we no longer have to live any fear of the wicked.  Some may ask, "Why does God demand so much obedience?"  The answer is He wants to protect us from the schemes of the wicked…. Obedience to Him works to our benefit. It becomes our protection.  All the promises of God are coinditionally based on our obedience to God.  When we come to the full revelation that God’s commands are true, we need never live in envy of the successes of the wicked.

"You are near, O Lord."  David knew the true fountain of life came in the form of God’s presence.  The presence of God is experienced through following the commands of God.  Whether or not we obey God is determined by our love of His presence.  Are you content with the presence of God, or must you have more?  When you MUST have more, you are in danger of falling into the schemes of the wicked.

Are you seeing a pattern here?  This book was written in 1995, yet it is totally appropriate in all we are facing in our world today.

Are you fearful with all you read and hear?

"And Peter answered Him and said, Lord, if it be Thou, bid me come unto Thee on the water.

And He said, Come.  And when Peter was come down out of the ship,he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

But when he saw the wind boisterous; he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me."    Matthew 14:28-30

It is very tempting to get our eyes off Him and onto the turbulent waves and wind around us, but when we do, then, like Peter walking on the water–we’ll sink!

And even when we do sink, isn’t it comforting to know He still will catch us and help pull us back up?!

"And immediately Jesus stretched forth His hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased."   Matthew  14: 31-32

Have you let Jesus into your ship?  Only then will the wind cease!

Are you keeping your eyes upon Him?

2 Chronicles 20:12  "O our God, wilt Thou not judge them?  for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do:  but our eyes are upon Thee."

We MUST keep our eyes on Jesus!!!!

Only then will we be able to walk on the turbulent waves around us!

I have actually fasted from the news and radio for awhile.  I will catch a bit here and there, but I decided I needed to be spending far more time in God’s Word and in communion with Him than reading all that’s wrong and all that we should have been doing and should do now as if it all depended on us.  I am NOT saying don’t call your congressmen and women or write letters or sign petitions.  BUT–if your hope and trust is in all you can "do", and not in getting on your knees and becoming more like Him….if you think getting back to the Constitution will save us yet you aren’t spending time in His presence…well, quite frankly, I think that is what is wrong with America today.  And the world.   Christians have lost their savor, and if the salt have lost its savor, by what shall it be salted?  "It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men."

To regain our savor, spend time with the Savior!

We can be fearful (which is not of God–see 1 John 4:18), or we can be faithful (which must come from God–again–spend time in His presence!)

The way we become like Him is not in our striving, but in our resting in Him–beholding His face in His presence!

Lovers spend a lot of time looking into each others’ eyes.

When’s the last time you just spent time gazing into His eyes?  Not come with your shopping list of needs or complaints or panic-striken cries?   Just to gaze upon Him Who is altogether lovely?

Here are some verses to meditate upon:

Psalm 16:11  "Thou wilt shew me the path of life, in Thy presence is fulness of joy; at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore."

Psalm 17:15  "As for me, I will behold Thy face in righteousness:  I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness."

1 Chronicles 22:19  "Now set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord your God; arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of the Lord"   (in your heart!)

Song of Solomon 2:14  "O My dove, that art in the cleft of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let Me see thy countenance, let Me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely."

He longs to see us!  To hear our voice!  Just as a bridegroom rejoices to see his beautiful bride and to hear her voice!

Isaiah 62:5  "…and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee."

Zephaniah 3:17  "The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty;  He will save, He will rejoice over thee with joy;  He will rest in His love, He will joy over thee with singing."

Oh, do come into His presence!  Spend time there, just soaking Him in!  In these turbulent times, it’s tempting to fear, to be angry, to feel helpless….spend some time meditating on Psalm 37.   Note verses 4 and 5 are in the midst of commands such as, "fret not" and "cease from anger"!   Those verses say:  "Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart."  (which have become His desires because you have spent time in His presence, hearing His heartbeat!).  "Commit thy way utno the Lord; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass."  HE will do it.  Not you.  What are you to do?  Rest in Him.  Trust in Him.  Commit to Him.  Delight in Him!

When all around makes you want to despair–heed His voice!  He says to "come away" with Him!  Song of Solomon 2:10  "My Beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up,My love, My fair one, and come away."  and again in verse 13–"Arise, My love, My fair one, and come away."

I leave you with Hannah Hurnard’s beautiful poetic rendition of Song 1:1-6.

"The Song of Songs,"  the loveliest song,

The song of Love the King,

No joy on earth compares with His,

     But seems a broken thing.

His Name as ointment is poured forth,

    And all His lovers sing.

Draw me–I will run after Thee,

Thou art my heart’s one choice,

Oh, bring me to Thy royal house,

     To dwell there and rejoice.

There in Thy presence, O my King,

To feast and hear Thy voice.

Look not upon me with contempt,

though soiled and marred I be,

The King found me–and outcast thing–

And set His love on me.

I shall be perfected by Love,

Made fair as day to see.

Is He your heart’s one choice?  Will you heed His call– to come away with Him to a quiet place, so He can impart His loveliness to you, and His strength?   So you can rest in Him and let Him do the work, while you rest content to be His handmaiden or servant?

Will you keep your eyes on HIM?   For then you can walk on those waves around you!!!

May you blessed and refreshed by His presence today!
