In His Bubble of His Grace (Again)

May 6th, 2010

I apologize for being MIA.

I am resting in the bubble of my Abba Father’s grace.

Tuesday night, my mom died.

I’m the oldest.   My brother 11 years younger.   Just us two.   Orphans now.

But not really.

Our Abba holds us in the palm of His hand and gives us hugs along the way, little things.

He gives us wisdom and guidance.

He gives us family and friends who hold us up in prayers.

And those prayers are our bubble.

I’ll be back next week and share my heart, my tips, my life.

For now, I’d appreciate your prayers for us both, and our families.  My brother is Bob, if you care to lift him up by name.

Thank you, dear friends!

Saturday Psalm and Praise~Praise Is My Teacher

May 1st, 2010

I was reading in Psalm 60 yesterday, and beside verse 7, I had a note:

"Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim also is the strength of Mine head; Judah is My lawgiver"

Beside the verse I had written, "Praise is my teacher!"

Why did I write that?

Do you know what Judah means?   Genesis 29:35  "And she conceived again, and bare a son:  and she said, Now will I praise the Lord:  therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing."

Judah means "praise"!

And the Torah, which many translate "law", is really our "teacher"–it is instruction or teaching.

Hence my note–praise is my teacher.

That statement was quite significant, because in the last week or so, the Lord has been showing me many things about prayer, one of which (or should I say, the most important of which?!)  is PRAISE!!!

"But Thou art holy, O Thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel."

He inhabits, lives in, dwells in our praises!   I just finished reading a series of three booklets, and the author stated that we are commanded to praise God even more than to pray to Him in the Scriptures!!!!  I haven’t checked that out for certain, but I do read through the Psalms a lot, and you definitely see many commands and examples of praising God–in all circumstances!

I am finding that praising God, especially by using Scripture, is revolutionizing my prayer life!   It keeps my focus on Him Who is faithful, powerful, loving and true vs. problems, circumstances, people and situations.    This increases my faith, puts a song in my heart and a smile on my lips!

I am going to be sharing more about this next week, but I wanted to share this beautiful thought with you:

Praise is your teacher!

Have a blessed day in the Lord!

Fabulous Family Friday!

April 30th, 2010

How about some Bible memorization?    I have tried many different ideas, but one that has worked the best is found at one of my favorite homeschooling sites, Simply Charlotte Mason!

Her Scripture Memory System is really easy to set up, and it works!  I confess we are bad about reviewing, but when we use this system, it works, AND it’s a great place to keep things all together rather than in multitudinous notebooks (now which purple notebook had last year’s Scripture memory in it?!).

We like to add hand motions to ours.   If you get stuck, ASL Browser  has a lot of words, with a mini-video demonstrating the sign.  You might have to use a different form of a word–maybe you need a noun and the ASL Browser only has the adjective.   Since we’re not trying to make sense to anyone, we just go with what’s there.  None of us really knows sign language, and a hearing-impaired person might really fall on the floor in shock or laughter at us, but it looks neat and helps little ones to remember key words!

I started a post about homeschooling resources and it grew into a book!   Instead I thought maybe each week on Fabulous Family Friday I could share some homeschooling resources that I really like for a particular area.  That way it would just be a pamphlet!        I can also share what we do in that subject area, and if we have done some things without buying curriculum, I’ll share that, too!

Another great resource for Bible is Grapevine Studies.   We have the Old Testament Overview and really like it!   I don’t have the girls do all the word studies in the higher levels–they do some, but not all of them, because they do some in their own personal study.    We have also done the Birth of Jesus, and really liked it!   We did it right before Christmas a few years ago.   I sprang for the multi-level teacher and student edition, since I have learners at all the levels!!!

I am also attempting to do a study on the names of God.   I am using a variety of sources, kind of cobbling together my own thing!   I’m using a cute kids’ book called God, What’s Your Name? , a precept study by Kay Arthur.  I’ll be honest—I don’t do ALL of it with the girls!   I’ll read the story, maybe work through some of the activities, and read some of the Scriptures.   My goal is one name of God every two weeks.

My purpose is to acquaint the girls with God’s names and what they mean.   I have my older girls come up with some Bible verses that depict that particular name, a character quality that goes along with it, a hymn….then write a little devotional and prayer to go with it.   There is no "right or wrong" answer–each girl may come up with something different!

I’m hoping to help the younger girls do some of this…..obviously I will be doing more of the work!   When we were in ATI, Karin Dent had shared Dinah Zike’s wonderful Big Book of Books one year.   I loved Minit-Booklets!   I think I overdid it with my older girls–they got to where they hated them!!!   We haven’t done them in a long time, but I think I am under control now and can be moderate….. *smile*

(It is available at Amazon.com as well as Dinah Zike’s website, but Cathy Duffy’s site in the link above had a review of it!)

I thought the little girls and I could make some "Minit-Booklets" with the key info on the names of God.  If we spring for it, I’ll post pictures!

I also would like to make a banner for each name—something simple either using felt or what we have on hand.  Again, I’ll post pics as we complete them!

Our "Bible Time" consists of:

Prayer

Singing hymns–we pick one for the week, and we sing through the hymnbook (you find some good ones and some….interesting ones? that way!  We just sing one a day), and whoever has their laundry day picks a hymn.   That usually averages 4 hymns a day!    Don’t stress—it takes about 10 minutes max, and it teaches theology, poetry, hymnology, music appreciation….you get the idea!

I just started having Anna and Bekah copy the "Hymn of the Week" and look up any words they don’t know.  They copy a stanza a day.

Then we pray again before reading Scripture.  We are currently reading a Psalm a day, and we share what stood out to us and/or what we are learning in our personal quiet times.

After this we do our Scripture memory, then either Grapevine or Names of God.   Lately those have not been getting done, so I need to get us started earlier!!!

This averages about an hour.  Except when we get into some really good discussions!  Then Bible time takes over all of school!   And that’s okay!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Here is another good use for those recipe boxes/card files—and a great organizational tip from Donna Otto!!!

She shared about her "perfect boxes" in Get More Done in Less Time (Amazon has the updated version–title and cover a bit different!)…..well, I have "perfect Rubbermaid Tubs"–and a LOT of them!!!  We actually call it "Rubbermaid City" out in the shop where they reside!   Things were a mess, as far as which tub had what–sewing stuff, baby stuff, little girl stuff, shoes, my stuff…..so I used Donna’s idea for the card files.   The sewing/craft/etc. tubs have letters.  The clothing/shoe tubs have numbers.  That way when someone is out in Rubbermaid City looking at the skyscrapers, they can at least narrow the field a bit!

In the file box, the numbered cards are first, lettered ones afterward.   Here are examples of how they’re listed:

1   Girls-

 Sleepers–newborn-6 mo.

 socks–  0-9 months

 blankets   2 heavy

                       1 thermal receiving

t-shirts– newborn

newborn hats                        crocheted slippers

bassinette pad and sheets

tights                                        bibs

diaper covers                         bonnets

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You’ll like this one!
15-  Girls’ clothes
   6 mo.–?
     and parts of dresses waiting for the
    matching pants!
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

From the sewing/craft tubs:

G– Fabric–some for matching (all of us or ABC maybe N+I)  [if you

haven’t figured it out, those are the initials of the youngest 5!]

Gingham

Pink check floral and border

4th of July

Daisy (leftover from dresses we made)

Snowman (ABC)

Snowflake (blue and red)

Navy w/apples

07 Easter fabric is in S (as in tub S, not in Susannah!)

That way we have an idea, before we heft huge and heavy tubs inside, whether it’s even in the ballpark!  (Ask me how I know that that is not the most efficient way to do things!!!       Unless, of course, you want to count it as your weight training program……!)

This system works great–you write on the index card what is in the tub or box.    That way the tub or box number (or letter) can stay the same.   As your children get older and you don’t need tub #1 to keep baby t-shirts and blankets, etc., you can throw that card away and put a new one in its place.

I bought mainly tan tubs for the boys’ clothes, so that would make them easier to spot, too.   You have to understand, that we have "lettered" tubs from little a to little e and A through V, including anywhere from 2-4 tubs for each of the oldest four girls!!!!

The numbered tubs go from 1-42, and there are 9 "sub cards" for #25–which is our Christmas stuff!!!  (25A, 25B, 25C…..to 25I–that’s a capital {i}–so we are talking over 80 tubs!!!)

As you can see, our card system is indispensible.    We do need to go through and weed things out again, especially since the youngest girl is now 9 years old!!!

This has been the best system for us!  I hope you find it helpful, too!

And just in case you think I am exaggerating when I say "Rubbermaid City"……

You can tell by how high these are stacked

that I have taallllll daughters!  (And yes,

I make them get them down for me, too!)

No, the ladder doesn’t lead to another level of

Rubbermaid Tubs!!!

(WHEW!)

So now you know why it’s important we have a system for navigation out there!!!!

I hope this week’s Fabulous Family Friday has been encouraging and helpful for you!

Now, go get some index cards, a few filecard boxes, several Rubbermaid Tubs (or Sterlite or whateverite) and—

LET’S GET ORGANIZED!!!!

Prayer Helps

April 29th, 2010

I still need to do a post about all God has shown me about prayer, especially during my Daniel Fast!

But I thought for today I would share a few resources that have blessed me incredibly in the area of prayer.  I have been a Christian for almost 31 years, and of course I’ve prayed, but I feel that since mid-February the Lord has really opened the "windows of Heaven", as it were, and is teaching me an advanced course!!!  Not that I mind!

I pray using this booklet every day–I divide up the portions for my husband, and I divide up the portions for the wife, praying them for myself (thanks to my pastor’s wife for sharing that with me!).   I also divide up the portions of praying for your children.   I pray the Bondage Breaking Prayer for situations and people in rebellion, and have seen answers!

This would be a good one for you busy mamas of littles!  You could even just pray one small section of a portion a day.  There’s no glory in praying the whole portion in one day!   I’ve been using mine for 9 years and it’s underlined, has dates in the margins, is finger stained…even has one slightly wrinkly area that got wet 5 years ago while we were camping!

A lady in our church used the Prayer Portions (which is where many of the prayers in this booklet came from) and really likes it.  I am planning to purchase one for myself, soon!  There are also some wonderful books about Blessing–one is You Are Blessed in the Names of God.   I love anything that uses the names of God!   All of her resources look wonderful!  Here is the website if you just want to browse around:  The Father’s Business

Another wonderful book is Destined for the Throne by Paul Billheimer.

I actually bought my copy in Strasbourg, France in 1982!!!  I’ve read it four times now, and decided this should be a yearly read!   Mr. Billheimer really drives home our purpose as the Bride of Christ, and how prayer in this life is preparing us to be Christ’s Bride for Eternity.   I love how Mike Bickle says it in The Seven Longings of the Human Heart (another great book by the way–and available for free as a download!  It’s the fourth book down on the page I linked.):

"Think of this life as a seventy year internship for the next."

Every thought, every word, every action, every motive has an effect on our eternal future.   How many regrets will we have for not having prayed more, praised more, trusted more?!

I am determined, by His grace, to not to waste any more of my life by focusing solely on the things of this world.  Oh, I’m not talking about great sins, obvious ones….I’m talking about……things like….worry.

"What will we do if our insurance runs out?"

"What if my husband loses his job?"

"What if ______ happens?"

We can’t play the what if game–we don’t need to!   I’m not saying that life is easy and comfortable—sometimes the Lord "stirs up the nest" so we will seek Him.   But that’s just the point–prayer should not be my "last resort" nor should praise be only when things are going well for me!

I feel like a babbling toddler, just learning in my praying–but I know my Father is pleased!

I’ll have more resources to share, as well as quotes and thoughts, but I wanted to share these wonderful resources with you, in case you struggle like I have for so long to know how/what to pray beyond, "God bless so-and-so.  Please work in this-and-that." !

May you be energized and revitalized as you seek Him and seek to commune with Him, bringing those you love before His Throne!

Fabulous Family Friday–A Day Early!

April 22nd, 2010

Since I will be gone tomorrow, I thought I’d post a day early!

This week is going to be geared more for you mommies of littles!  I remember years ago reading in Mary Pride’s "Help for Growing Families" newsletter, a mom of older children say, "A 6 year old that can set the table is great—but a 13 year old that can single-handedly clean the bathroom is worth her weight in gold!"

AMEN!

But–you can’t wait until they’re 13 to teach them to help!  In fact, if you have not been training them in servanthood all along, you will not reap the harvest later!

LET them "help" now.  Yes, even as 1 1/2 and 3 year olds!   They can "help" you do dishes–yes, I know, they make more of a mess than if they didn’t help!  But that way you can clean the fronts of the cupboards and mop the floor, too!

Just an attitude of "I like you and I want you around" can go soooo far in training them!  As you delight in them, they will want even more to help and please you and be around you.  They will like helping and you establish a bonding during this time.

I’ll let you in on a hard-earned secret—many "experts" are saying this, but remember–when I started out there wasn’t the internet nor the plethora of voices you have today!

"Chores" are more for building relationships and training character than for getting things done!   (You knew I was going to bring this back around to relationships, didn’t you!    )   In fact, I remember a quote by Marilyn  Howshall:

"Character training adds time to every duty, and every duty must stop for character training."

I know it’s hard when you have supper to fix, laundry to keep up, baby to nurse, toddler to feed…..but you must, must, must take this to heart.

So, now you ask, HOW?!

One thing I remember doing when my four oldest were small, was asking my husband what top three things he wanted done each day.   That gave me direction when "life" happened and I didn’t know what my #1 priority was!!!  They all screamed for attention!

For my husband, it was dishes done (or at least not piled to the ceiling!), laundry done (he didn’t mind helping with laundry, but not if he had to transfer everything just to get a load in!), and the house picked up enough he didn’t need a scoop shovel to get through!  He wasn’t expecting pristine conditions–just a general pick up.

Now, your littles can help you sort laundry and put it in the wash, then transfer to the dryer or help you hang things out.  Or play nearby while you hang them out.   They can help wash dishes, put some away (silverware has always been a favorite among my littles!), and can set the table, too.  They can obviously help pick things up.  In fact, you could have a "Daddy Blessing Time" when a half hour before Daddy is due home, you can set the timer and "race" to get things picked up and nice for Daddy!  This helps build excitement, honor and love for your husband as your children see you want to make things nice for Daddy’s homecoming.  And you know what?  It will help your flagging energy and attitude, too!

Also take time to read to your little ones.  We can get sooooo busy with the homekeeping chores that we keep putting off these things.  I wish I had taken more time to read aloud than I did.  Those things that scream for your attention will still be there.  Trust me!  It never "all" gets "done"!!!!   There is an article I read years ago called "The Tyrany of the Urgent".  It is worth a read!   We must daily choose between the "urgent" and the "important".  The "good" and the "best".   Mike Bickle talks of burnout–that it isn’t doing too much, but "doing" in power of the flesh and not the power of the Spirit.   I fear we mamas are far more guilty of that than we realize!

It takes constantly looking into His face (yes, between diapers and dishes!), continuing to look up and ask Him, "What do YOU want me to do, today, Lord?  What are YOUR priorities for me?"

Often it is just doing the "next thing", but don’t crowd out snuggles, cuddles, giggles and read-alouds!

Have a "tea party" with your little daughter while her baby brother is sleeping.

Help your 3 year old budding engineer build the train system of his dreams while his baby sister is napping or safe nearby in her bouncy seat.

Yes, I know.  Naptime is "your" time to get things done.  I’m not saying do this every day.  But once a week or two, you can forego your agenda to build memories and relationships with your little ones.

I think you’ll find them more willing helpers when they see mama takes time to play sometimes, too!

Even just coloring a page in their colorbook with them can mean so much!   And listening to their sweet chatter.   Believe me, young mama–before you blink twice, they will be grown and you will yearn to color beside them and hear that sweet nonsense chatter just once more!

One last piece of practical advice–get your "servants" going!   My husband bought me a bread machine one year, a food processor another.   His co-workers said, "Nothing with a cord on it counts for a present for your wife!"  To which he responded, "You don’t know my wife!"

These "servants" can help you in your homemaking greatly!  Probably THE NUMBER ONE "servant" you must have is the crock pot.  There are so many good cookbooks out there with good meal ideas using the crock pot.   Please make use of this wonderful servant to help you get at least one area under control!

Oh, and something else I read in Feed Your Family for $12 a Day   is to split your dinner preparation up.   The author did 15 minutes in the morning, then 15-30 minutes before supper.   That can help greatly if dinner is on its way before the "suicide hour"!

Now one last piece of "relational" advice!   Take time to nourish your own spirit.  Even if you have to catch it in "snippets" here and there, read devotional books and articles that encourage you and lift your spirit.  NOT the ones making you feel like a failure!  Or giving you 20 more things you "should" be doing!  ACK!

Here’s a GREAT place to start:  Laine’s Letters.   I love Laine!   You could print a few off at a time, and either read one while little ones are napping, or before bed (if you’re a night owl!), or just whenever you can catch a few minutes.   They are very good and encouraging!

I hope this week’s Fabulous Family Friday has been an encouragement!   And if there are specific areas you would like to know more about, please feel free to either comment and ask or e-mail me.  I don’t pretend to have arrived, nor to know all the answers, but if I can help, I would gladly do so!

HUGS to you, young mamas!  Enjoy them as much as you can!

Embrace Life

April 20th, 2010

Get out your tissues!

This is only 1 1/2 minutes long, but it will make you cry!

And it means a lot to me, because without this, after his terrible accident 5 1/2 years ago, my husband would not be alive today!

Embrace Life!

Fabulous Family Friday!

April 16th, 2010

I’m starting something new!

I remember years ago asking a Godly older lady in our church, who had every single one of her 33 descendants at that time (children and spouses, grandchildren and spouses, and great-grandchildren) professing to be Christians, and many were serving the Lord.

I asked her her secret!

Her answer?

A humble, slightly embarrassed, "Oh, I don’t know!  I just trusted the Lord a lot!"

I was disappointed!  I wanted seminar notes!  I wanted the syllabus!  I mean, this lady was proven successful!!!!

I determined that if I had that glorious fruit, I would make sure I wrote down "what I did" so I could someday help young moms!

Now here I am…NOT a grandmother or great-grandmother, and not having raised all my children yet, but having fruit in my older girls.  And people are asking me, "What did you do?"

A clear light of understanding dawned on my soul—"Oh, I don’t know!  I just trusted the Lord a lot!"

Oh, Mrs. Grandlinard, I understand now!

We don’t always know "what worked", and sometimes it’s different for each child!

But I can look back and see some things that I really believe the Lord helped us to do right–although we certainly had no idea at the time!    And don’t think for a minute that we didn’t also make our share of mistakes!!!

So I thought I would devote Fridays to share tips–resources, child-training, homeschooling, life…..maybe even a recipe or two now and then!

The three areas I want to try my best to cover each Friday are relationships, homeschooling, and practical tips to help the home run smoothly with little ones (and bigger ones!) in the mix.

If you’ve read my blog for any length of time, you know I preach the "3 Rs"—Relationships, Relationships, Relationships!!!!  Specifically, your relationship with God, your spouse (if you have one–if not, God gets a double-portion!), and your children.  If those aren’t in order, it doesn’t matter how good of a job I do on the academic 3 Rs, or if my children make lots of money, or if they are successful according to the world.   If they don’t love Jesus with all their heart, soul, strength and mind and others as themselves, I have failed at the most important "subject" I can teach them.

Yes, I know about free will.  Yes, I know I won’t be perfect (I know I have not been, many times!).   But overall, I should have no major regrets that I disobeyed something the Lord was showing me because I needed to "get school done" or "get the laundry done" or "minister to someone".   I am not pointing a condemning finger at anyone who may have children not serving the Lord.  We do the best with the revelation we have at the time.  I’m not talking about those of us, who, however imperfectly, still were trying to teach about the Lord and His ways.

 But if we choose to focus more on head knowledge than heart-relationship, that will set us up for failure.  I’ve seen too many moms stress over whether their children met the local high school standards for graduation, but they didn’t take time for relationships because they were too busy "doing school".

I didn’t start homeschooling to have smart kids.  I wanted to homeschool even before we had any children!   And the main reason?  To totally have their hearts and turn them to their Savior.   Anything else was the "all these things" that the Lord Jesus promised "to add unto me" if I sought HIS Kingdom first.

In 18 years of homeschooling (and soon to graduate daughter #3!), I have been what many would call "irresponsible" by letting some "schooling" go.  But I’ve also seen, in 18 years of homeschooling, that my children have learned all that is important to know, often without my having to micromanage every step of their education!   Yes, we’ve had seasons where they are not very self-motivated.  I have some that have been more so than others.

What about "gaps" you say?  (To which I say, "Phooey!"  The public school has gaps!  I mean, very few, if any, of our local high school grads could milk a goat in less than 5 minutes!!!    )

Here is my antidote to "gapitis"!     It’s the bottom line, and the best homeschooling advice I could give, borne out of my experience (so far!):

1. Model and lead them to love the Lord (a living-love relationship with the Bridegroom King!)

2. Teach them the basics

3. Train them in good (and Godly!) character

And they will have the basics and the character to learn whatever you miss!

There you have it in a nutshell!

` ~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`

Now who needs a laundry tip?!   I will say that my laundry never piled as high as the ceiling–our laundry area was our back porch/entry for years!  So we couldn’t just let it pile up!

That’s not to say, however, that I always kept it up!

I would have the girls help me fold, and then as the oldest ones got a little older, I would put them in charge of white/light colored clothes, dark clothes, and towels,   and the younger girls would help fold.  Depending on the season, one of them would usually be inundated!    Then we had these wars where no one wanted to fold someone else’s underwear!       Soooo…..we bought everyone their own nylon mesh lingerie bag.   That didn’t take care of all the problems, but it helped!

Nine and a half years ago, I was sharing my woes with my dear, sweet husband, and he suggested that everyone old enough have their own laundry day.   He said the 2 oldest girls could help do a younger girl’s, then I would do ours and the baby’s (when she was born).   I think at first I did towels, too.   I didn’t know if it would work, but God was teaching me to listen carefully to the counsel of my steady, very laid-back husband (who doesn’t usually have a syllabus or seminar notes!   ).   So we tried it.

Monday was Cassia’s day, with some help (she was 7 at the time).

Tuesday was Susannah’s (she was almost 9).

Wednesday was Leah’s, and she also did Anna’s (Leah was almost 12, Anna was 3).

Thursday was Jessica’s, and she also did Bekah’s (Jessica was almost 14, Bekah 1 1/2).

Friday was for me to do mine, towels, etc.

Of course there was the learning curve!   Jessica and Leah helped me to train the younger girls (Susannah and Cassia at the time).    Believe it or not, for the most part, it started working very well!

As our towel load increased, we added that each of them do a load of towels on their day.

Anna has now taken Fridays, and she does Isaiah’s.   Bekah has taken Saturdays, with Charissa doing her own on Tuesdays with Susannah.  Cassia does Noah’s laundry on her day.

It is a bit harder for me to jump in sometimes–especially when some people leave their laundry in and don’t keep it going!

So although there are a few glitches now and then, this system has worked very well for us for 9 1/2 years!

There was, however, one particular "sister" who for 7 years could not seem to remember which day was her laundry day…..

But just so you will have hope–*smile*–she is now one of the most organized ones in the bunch!!!

I’ve heard some moms right away say, "Oh, that won’t work!"     Well, I just ask you to consider it and maybe try it for awhile.  Give it 3-6 months for training.   You might be surprised!!!   The younger girls helped all along, but their "serious laundry training" started at about 7 years old.  By 8 they should be able to do it with little supervision!

We don’t use anything dangerous on our laundry.   Just good old Arm and Hammer Washing Soda and borax!   We do plan to make the laundry soap with those and the Fehls Naphtha soap that is the all the rage in the homeschooling circle!   We use white vinegar for the rinse.   So nothing with dyes or perfumes or anything seriously toxic.    No bleach!

I would like to share a beautiful resource with you–one of my favorites!  It is out of print, apparently, but available used on Amazon.com!

I love Emilie Barnes’ writing style and her practical loveliness, and this book is full of beautiful thoughts and ideas for creating a warm and lovely home atmosphere.

I hope something here encouraged you this week!

May you be blessed as you seek to live out your calling as a HelpMeet to your husband, a Co-operator with God in loving and training your children, and a Co-Creator with Him of a home that speaks of welcome, beauty and His love!

Do You Have a Purpose for Living?

April 8th, 2010

One of the many temptations in the Christian life, is to just go through life without much purpose.   It’s like we are just getting by until we can get to Heaven.

Is that what Jesus left us on the earth for?

I know it’s so easy to do…..our husbands need to make a living so we can eat and be clothed, we mamas need to be occupied with training and teaching our children, helping the paycheck stretch, keeping the laundry going, house somewhat clean, meals cooked….

….but somehow I believe if we become consumed with all of that, we will burn out.  We need a purpose bigger than ourselves and just our daily lives to keep us going.  And I believe that is how He designed us to be!

I see many young people, especially those close to graduating or just graduated, wondering what their purpose is.  Or they think their "purpose" is to go to college.  Or get a job.  Or get married.

I really believe we need to have purpose as a family, and we need to help our young people have a purpose bigger than flirting, fun and food or college/job/marriage to shoot for!

My girls did a great job blogging about our trip to Iowa to hear Mark Cahill.   When Cassia shared with Dallas and me about it back on February 27 (I clearly remember the date, because Dallas and I had just gotten home from celebrating our anniversary!), I thought, "Well, that’s nice!"

But when I went to bed, I felt we should really go!  So the next morning I asked Dallas, "What do you think?  Is this crazy?!"   He thought we should go for it!

As the girls explain in their blog, God worked out the three main things–someone to care for our littles, someone to care for the animals, and a relative inexpensive place to stay for the night when we went out there (I wasn’t up for driving all the way back home right after the meeting!!!).   And God provided each of those things!!!

I am so very grateful for my husband and his vision.   Cassia really has a heart for evangelism, and this trip and the meeting really polarized things for her and helped her to be bolder about sharing her faith.  In fact, we stopped at all but one rest stop on the way home, and we kept teasing her that she didn’t even give us a chance to hand out a tract!  She beat us to just about everybody!!!!

As we listened to Mark, as I watched my daughters, and as we talked about it, it became quite obvious that this is the purpose we are left on earth for.   And God has put each of us right where we are for a reason.   I know He calls people to leave their homes as missionaries, or to go somewhere else because He has a new "field" for them, even if they’re not "official" missionaries (aren’t we all to be?).   But too many times, I think we decide where we’re going to work, live, play…..and we’re not really getting His mind and His plan.

Sunday evening we listened to No Crossing Over on Mark’s site, then listened to the dvd I had bought at his meeting.  He talked about the two reasons we are here:

1.   To Make Him Known

That is really #1 priority.  You don’t have to go to Africa for this one.   There are lost souls all around us.  You don’t have to have a college degree, be eloquent or even well-versed in apologetics.   Just share the most wonderful news in the world!

After all, as Mark says, the goal is to get to Heaven with NO "free tickets to Heaven" in your pocket–you should have given them ALL away!

What others do with it is their business.  I really, really appreciated Mark’s emphasizing over and over again–one plants, another waters, but God gives the increase.  He didn’t say, "I lead this one and that one to the Lord".  He simply shares the Good News with everyone he meets.   He said it’s his hobby!

2. To Make Him Look Good

This has more to do with our actions.   We all blow it now and then, but what characterizes us?   If I’m sharing the Good News with someone, then they see me snarl at my children for interrupting or hear me talk unkindly about the grumpy neighbor next door, that’s not going to wash.

We should do our jobs well.  Whether at the office, factory, or in the home, we should do the best job we can.  Give 150% effort!

And we should be generous.  It’s no great revelation for me to say money is definitely a god and an idol in this day and age.  "Money talks".  How much more when we give it away?  And don’t wait until you get rich to bless others!  God entrusts His money and possessions to us!  They are not ours to do with as we please anyway!

I’ve been quite convicted of all the "stuff" I’ve hung onto.   I am motivated to get rid of more of the kids’ clothes–do I not trust Him to give me more should He bless us again?  I’m not talking about getting rid of everything, but I confess 30+ Rubbermaid tubs of clothing and shoes are too many!!!!

Yesterday while taking my walk, I thought about Mark’s statement about the "free tickets to Heaven."  Remember the parable of the talents?   The one servant who got one talent?  What did he do with it?

Nothing.

Oh, let’s not be like him!  Let’s not be content to get ourselves to Heaven and not care about anyone else!  Wouldn’t that be the height of self-centeredness?   To not worry about anyone but ourselves?

Jessica posted words to the song "Let My Life Be a Light" at the end of her post today.   Please take a few moments and head over to the girls’ blog and read it.   If you’re truly a Christian, then don’t keep it to yourself!  As Mark told us, there is no "gift of Evangelism"!  We are all to be sharing our faith!

And if you just aren’t 100% sure….please take a moment to visit one of the links Jessica listed, which I will also list here.

Please remember that Christ came and died for one reason:

To restore your relationship to your Heavenly Father and Creator.  To the fellowship He created man for in the Garden in Eden.   It’s all about a relationship–not a religion.   You will want to obey Him out of love, not fear.

My heart is filled and satisfied in Him–in my relationship with the One Who created me and died for me.

I pray your heart will be, too!

If you know Him–share Him!   If you don’t–please receive Him today!!!!    The delight of my heart would be to see you all in Heaven one day!
