Fabulous Family Friday–The Sound of Music

July 22nd, 2011

Little did my mother know back in 1973, when she let me take the “Tonette” in 5th grade, what it would lead to……

Only part of the "family orchestra"--four more are up and coming!

When I started flute in band the next year,  they bought me a Bundy flute used fr om my neighbor for $50 with the stern admonition that if I started band, I could not quit.  I was in it for all 6 years!

After I “proved” I would stick out the first year, they bought me a “new” Bundy….I really wish I had kept that one!  But I still have my original Bundy…I will be teaching my 10 year old, Charissa, on it this fall!

I did stick with band for all 6 years of junior high and high school, through three band teachers, too!    My freshman year I tried the drum set….fun but  not quite “me”!

Then in 10th grade, there were too many flutes for our small school, so I switched to oboe!  (It’s in the same key and most of the notes are the same fingering–the double reed is a bit different, though! LOL!)   It belonged to the school so I didn’t even have to pay rental.  I got to be a part of the Honors Band that year as there was only one other oboist within a 30 mile radius!

Did you know that the whole orchestra tunes to the oboe?   According to Wikipedia it’s because the oboe pitch is secure and penetrating.  I was told it’s because the oboe didn’t have much wiggle room for tuning, so you got as close as possible to be “in tune” and then the rest of the orchestra tuned to you!  ;)   Makes an oboist feel a bit more important!  :D

I tried trumpet (didn’t have the lip for it!), clarinet (that mouthpiece hurt with my braces), and played tenor saxophone in jazz band (another instrument that has the same fingering as the flute–handy!)

I always wanted to take violin, but alas!   A small town like mine had no orchestra!

When I got into college it wasn’t for music.  But I held onto my flute.   About halfway through college God really got hold of my life and changed my direction.  I took a semester of music at a small Christian college majoring in voice.  And took piano.

Although I only took one semester, I learned enough about theory between my classes and the piano lessons to help me later arrange things for my daughters and me to play!

I share that with you because there are many times we think music is a “nice extra” to “fit in” after the academics.  I’m glad my parents made me understand it was a commitment, and that it was every bit as important as French and Algebra.   And I’m glad they supported and encouraged me, coming to nearly all my band concerts.

When Dallas and I got married and looked forward to having children, we talked about what we wanted for them.  He knew of many families that really got into sports, and although there are certainly things to be learned from that, he felt music was something they could take into their lives once they were grown.  I really appreciate his vision!

When Jessica was very small, she wanted to play the “Volin-V” (so named after her See and Say Busy Bee when he said, “Violin-V!” :) )   At 5 she started violin lessons with an elderly professor at a college about 20 minutes from us.   After he retired we found another teacher, and a year later Leah joined her.

Soon came harp for Jessica, cello for Susannah and Cassia….and I was busy helping them practice!  No, we didn’t listen to the tapes like we were supposed to and no, I didn’t practice hours a day with them (which is why we’re not in Carnegie Hall! LOL!).

I did what I could as a busy mama of many who was also homeschooling.  But I also didn’t just give up.

When the girls were 10, 8, 5, 2 and Anna a tiny baby, Dallas suggested we sing for the local senior center.  So we did!  I remember Susannah and Cassia pushing each other off the piano bench, a dear elderly lady from my Home Ec Club holding Anna, and Jessica, Leah and I singing and playing a few songs together.  And that is how it started, nearly 14 years ago!

I had to write the “music” in a way they could understand it–a real challenge when the “cello girls” joined us!   I would write string names and finger numbers, and simplify hymns so they could play, too!  That theory class came in quite handy! ;)

Over the years, their skills have grown–thank goodness!–and we have a BLAST playing together!

I often tell people, when we share in song, that “family harmony” has more to it than just sounding good together!

For whatever reason, (maybe because we  have a life beyond music!), we seem to end up practicing late at night.  Some of us like to go to bed early, and others of us are night owls!  So usually someone is a bit on the grumpy side and needs to lighten up, and others of us need to be sensitive to that and not let non-essentials put off our practice sessions until so late!

You might think you are not very gifted in music.   Do you know what really sparked my love of music?  My mom had these record albums with “The Best of the Classics” with many of the popular classical pieces.  To this day I am familiar with many of the classics thanks to those albums!  I used to listen to them ALL the time!  (Suzuki-style before I even knew about it!)

Playing good music for your children is a cinch in this internet age!  You can find just about any composer’s work on YouTube with excellent orchestras playing it.  That way your children can see it as well as listen!  (A privilege I didn’t have!)

Check your local community–there may be free concerts, especially if there is a college nearby.   We are blessed, even in our rural area, to have a local symphony (that two of my daughters are going to audition for this fall!), as well as a Christian summer orchestra camp, drawing the cream of the crop for dance, choir, orchestra and theater.   And it’s all free!   So don’t think just because you’re in the middle of a cornfield, there’s nothing nearby! :)

Listening to good music is a good start.  Simply Charlotte Mason has a rotation to listen to different composers for 6 weeks at a time.  You could shorten that if you want to get more in in a year’s time.   But do read up a bit on them and listen to some of their more popular works.  I confess I’ve not been as consistent with that–but my children listen to it on their own! (Like mother, like children, I guess!)

And that is true–if you grump about “having to hear that song one more time”, you will not instill a love of music in your children!

Lessons don’t have to be with a professional….my girls have taken lessons from a professor, a second violinist in a philharmonic orchestra, homeschooled young ladies, college students and now back to more professional teachers!   Jessica started teaching at 13!  The girl she taught was only 8, so all it takes it being a few steps ahead of your student! ;)  (Kind of like homeschooling, eh?!)

My girls have done and now are doing work for their lessons. Their teachers need projects done that they can’t always get to as full-time teachers, so the girls work while one gets her lesson, then switch.  It works out very well.

Cassia wanted piano lessons for a long time, and I taught her a little, but it was obvious she was going to go far beyond me and needed just the right teacher.   A few years ago God opened the door to a wonderful, Godly lady who is just right for Cassia!   She also does work for her lessons.

Maybe going the instrument route isn’t possible, but you can sing!  We typically sing about 4 hymns  day when we are in our routine for school.  Yes, I said FOUR!

“Doesn’t that take a long time?”

I timed it once–it takes about 10 minutes!

10 minutes five times a week yields the ability to sing many hymns and harmonize!

I usually pick a “hymn of the week” for us to sing, to get more familiar with  it.  Then we also sing through the hymnbook–just sing the next song whether we know it or not! (That’s where those piano lessons come in handy!)   We do save the Christmas ones for Christmas time, but we plow through the rest of the hymnbook and find some real treasures in there!

Whoever does their laundry on that day also gets to pick a hymn–and yes, 3 days we double up!   Sometimes we also are working on a hymn to sing together and it only makes sense to do it then, too.   So there you have 3-4 hymns.   The girls are amazed at how familiar many of the hymns are because of us singing them over the years!  My only regret is I have not been consistent since we started this back in the mid-90s.  Just think of the rich treasury of hymns and songs they would have!

We thought we would start having a “Sunday night singing” as a family and sing through all the weekly hymns.  Obviously by the end of the year we might have to split those up since we’d have close to 52 songs!   We were at a ministry once where they picked a hymn per week and sang it at suppertime.  They had it in a binder, and you would move the previous week’s to the back of the binder.  We started doing something similar, and plan to pick it back up here soon.

We also have some Scripture songs we want to learn, so we will be factoring those into the “mix” as well!

Do you see how easy it is to add music to your family’s life?  And how important it is to homeschooling?  It has been said that when the church stopped singing, the Dark Ages came.  I realize that is simplistic, but there is a nugget of truth there.

One of the disadvantages, in my opinion, of worship teams and such, is that the congregation can stop singing and let them carry it.  I know that doesn’t always happen, but I’ve seen it happen and it saddens me.  You hardly ever hear anyone singing in harmony in some congregations.  That is a beautiful art!  (My girls learned this by playing different parts with their instruments as well as hearing it in the music we listened to.)

In the future we do plan to be a little more organized about practicing, taking one day a week to practice together.  But I want to share that we really didn’t practice hours each day.  We sing together, practice together like crazy women when a ministry opportunity comes up ;)  and have fun!   If I could do it with four young children and a baby, you can, too, mama!  Just do what you can, use what you have, and let God perfect it!

I would plead with you to not let this one slip by “so you can get the academics done” (or housework).   Music can lift the soul, encourage others, and become something siblings and parents can do together.   If “all” you ever do is bless a local nursing home with your “ministry”, that will certainly bless and minister to our Lord as well!  And those people enjoy it so much!

If you can have the far reaching vision of music with your children, then someday that can be an opportunity for them to bless others through singing/playing together, giving lessons (for pay and/or as a ministry), as well as something to give them a family purpose.

We are known all over our county and a few others because of our singing ministry.  Many people come up to us and tell us how much they enjoyed it, loved seeing the little ones in there, too, or even remember when the older girls were “the little ones”!

We started with little character songs and hymns. Added a few  hand motions and maybe some Scripture memory.  It took a lot to fill 20 minutes!

Now we can fill an hour easily! ;)

But it starts with little steps, and most of all, it starts with Mama having a heart for ministry and a vision of family unity that will keep you going even when the “musicians” are giving you a hard time!   (Like this goofy video–you won’t see anything because we were practicing late one night and some people weren’t dressed for videoing!  LOL!  And as you can tell–we were NOT in tune! :P  And in spite of my “stern” sounding tone of voice, it was all in fun!  No children or mothers were harmed in this video! )

Add big smiles to the mix and you can’t go wrong!

And one day, you may be blessed to hear their pure, sweet voices leading The Star Spangled Banner at the Sale of Champions during the 4-H fair:

Or maybe you will find a funny song to sing together that will make people smile!

Or maybe one of your daughters will surpass you on piano and take your place accompanying her sister–far better than you ever could!

Or maybe the same pianist daughter, who used to spend hours each day challenging you, will put that energy to better use in playing a tremendously moving piece:

So go ahead–make some music and memories together!

(And thanks, Mom, for making me practice, making me stick with it, and always believing in me!)

Here is a neat resource that we have used–in fact, I need to get ours out and work with the younger ones!

(Scroll down for the handbells–the first ones you see are combination handbell/deskbells.  I always intended to get the extended range and chromatic bells….maybe one of these days!)

T-Tapp Tuesday–T-Tapp Is a Journey

July 19th, 2011

Between 4-H fair preparation, computer issues, and then just plain 4-H fair  madness–it’s been a crazy few weeks!

But now I hope to get back to regular blogging–both for T-Tapp Tuesdays and for Fabulous Family Fridays.  And maybe even a few more in between!

I had posted the following on the T-Tapp forums three or four weeks ago, and I thought it might encourage some of you (who don’t frequent the forums).

Next Tuesday I’ll have a post about workout wear.   And Friday–the importance of music in your homeschool!

Editing to add–just found out Deep Discount Tuesday today (July 19) is Hit the Floor at 40% off!!!  Here is the discount code:   DDT071911

`~~`~~`~~`~~`~~`~~`~~`~~`~~`~~`~~`~~`

Last fall, my family went on what turned out to be a 5,200 mile trip “out East”. That included going from Niagara Falls out to Boston and CT and all the way to Florida and back through the Smokey Mountains! (And many places in between!)

We planned. We figured. We refigured. We threw some things out. We added some things in. We refigured. We packed. We fixed some things on the van. We repacked. We fixed some food and snacks to take on the first “leg” of the trip. We bought needed jackets and shoes. We repacked (are you noticing a pattern here?! LOL!)

We even talked to others to see how long they allowed for such a trip.

Finally the big day arrived! We had prepared and now we were ready to go!

Do you think the trip went EXACTLY as planned with NO glitches?! No! It was an adventure! You might plan to stop at such and such time for a hotel, until you find out there are none to be found within a 20 mile radius when you’re ready to stop!

You might plan to stop at the next exit for food…until you find the next exit has only gas stations.

You might plan to wait until you get to this point to have everyone use the restroom, until you hear a voice in back say, “I have to go potty REAL BAD!”

You might have NOT planned to see the Statue of Liberty, because you didn’t want to go anywhere near New York City. But it was practically on the way so you did (and hyperventilated when you realized you were headed down the west side of Manhattan! ).

You might have planned to get to one friend’s house by 10 pm, but instead showed up at 12:30 a.m. (bless them for waiting up for us and taking us anyway!)

You might have planned to see Jamestown, but realized you just didn’t have enough time to do it justice, so you had to cross it off the list.

You might not have planned to go to Florida, or just barely dip down there from Georgia so the kids could say they’d been there, but then you find out you can go to the Safety Harbor Retreat, so your family decides to go visit a cousin in Ft. Myers (and have a blast while they’re there!).

You might decide the trip can only be 16 days max, but because the whole point was to make memories as a family….well, what’s another 4 days?!

Thankfully we didn’t have any van breakdowns, although our “check engine” light came on several times during the trip, giving us something to be concerned about! (The fuel pump did go out—but not on the trip! Whew!)

So what does this have to do with T-Tapp?! (Other than going to the Retreat!)

T-Tapp is a journey, too. We make preparations. We buy the dvds. We read all we can in the book and on the forums.

We get some workout gear together. We decide when and where we’re going to work out.

We have goals. We might refine the goals. We even talk to others to see how long they took for the journey.

Then we start! We’re off on our journey!

But what’s this? A detour?! So soon? Ah, life happens. We do what we can, planning to get back to it after this crisis is over.

Back at it. Refine the goals again. Doing great, seeing some progress!

You weren’t planning on thinking about your eating at all. But since it’s “on the way”, you decide to make a few changes–and even though you hyperventilated a bit about it, you feel better!

All is going along great! You’re really enjoying the “scenery” you’re starting to see!

But wait! What’s with the “check engine” light?! Well, you’ll keep an eye on it, but you go on.

Then progress seems to be a bit slower. You worry just a bit about that light. Things seem to come to a standstill and you’re worried you’ll never get to your destination.

Now you find out why the engine light was on (adrenal fatigue, PCOS, insulin resistance, fibromyalgia, hypothyroid). Time to refine those goals, again. Sigh. (Are you noticing a pattern here?!)

You rethink your workouts and now your focus is more on health. You still would like to get to your destination, but right now getting that engine working better is the most important thing to do.

Things start going better and you get a bonus you hadn’t expected–maybe you lost a size or your energy returned. Maybe you got a compliment on your youthful appearance that you hadn’t really noticed in your focus on health!

Pretty soon you’re on your way again! You don’t know when you’ll reach your destination, but now, you really don’t care! It’s an adventure, and you’re anxious to see what waits around the next bend!

Unlike a family trip “out East”, the T-Tapp journey doesn’t have to end–even when you reach your destination.

Because then it’s fun to help others on their journey, as you continue to enjoy yours!

Remember, just like a family trip that it’s wise to plan for, but be flexible with, so is our journey with T-Tapp. It’s wise to plan, but we need to be flexible with it so we can enjoy the journey as best we can and soon we find out…

The journey is as important (if not more so) than the destination!

Enjoy the journey!

Giveaway Winner!

June 18th, 2011

Another long day, but Cassia now has her own Z-pack!  (Zithromax) I think she was jealous and wanted to be like Susannah….   I call them the Z-pack Twins now!  :D

The winner of the alfalfa giveaway is….

CINDY!

You can send me your address at tinklingbells (at) medt (dot) com and I will try to get that out this week!

Gena–I haven’t forgotten about you!  Someone forgot to buy more padded mailers at the store last week…. (yeah, that would be me! :P )   I will try to get yours out Monday!

Thank you all so much for being patient with me–hopefully next week will be better, on time, and yes, there is ONE more giveaway!  So do check back Tuesday!

Happy Tappin’!

Where ARE those Dull Moments, Anyway?!

June 18th, 2011

My apologies to my T-Tapp Tuesday gals.  To say the rest of this week has been crazy would be an understatement! I thought for sure today I’d be able to at least pick a winner out of all you hardworking mamas!

My mother-in-law is now on hospice. She has infection in her bowel and around her heart, with no immune system now nor antibiotics that can fight it (she is allergic to so many).

Another daughter is not feeling well.  At least we know to get her to the doctor first thing in the morning.  We’d appreciate prayers!

I will try my best to at least announce a winner tomorrow.  My apologies for not getting this done sooner.  Life has hit in the extreme this week, it seems!

But, along with Habbakuk, “yet will I rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”   (Hab. 3:18)  It is a choice.  I choose to rejoice!

Thank you for your patience and your prayers!

“T-Tapp Tuesday?”

June 15th, 2011

Sorry to be late…it will actually be later today when I post Workout Wednesday!

It’s been a rough few days.

Sunday we visited my step-mother-in-law.  She has AML (acute myeloid leukemia) and isn’t doing well. In fact now they found she has infection both in her bowels and her heart.  She is saved, but please pray for her to have peace and for the doctors to have wisdom.

Then Monday,  I ended up taking Susannah to the doctor, since she had been sick since Friday night and it wasn’t getting any better.  Turned out she was dehydrated!   So we spent all afternoon at the hospital getting IV fluids.

And then today…..just as I started teaching my first student (today is the last day of music lessons for the summer!) Jessica comes in the living room to tell me Bekah hurt her food badly.  I’m thinking broken bones!  But instead I find out she stepped on a nail in the barn–yeah, rusty, dirty, and no, she’s not supposed to be barefoot in the barn!  It went in about an inch, Dallas said.  OUCH!

So today has been turned topsy turvy, too!

We’d appreciate prayers for healing, for wisdom, for my SANITY! and for some “dull moments” to come! ;)

Hopefully I will be posting later today about workout gear–Lord willin’ an’ the creek don’t rise! :p

T-Tapp Tuesday–What’s So Great About Alfalfa?

June 7th, 2011

First things first!

The winner of the SunRay Sit Down TappCore is…..

Gena!

Please e-mail me at tinklingbells (at) medt (dot) com with your address so I can get it out to you!

Thank you everyone for entering!  And keep up the GREAT work on getting your workouts in!

`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`

Teresa has a Premium Blended Alfalfa that is a really good product!

I was taking another good brand of alfalfa, so I decided to finish that first.  I could not believe the difference when I started taking Teresa’s!

I shed water immediately!

I’ve also noticed that it helps balance my hormones.  Two of my daughters, whose cycles were not regular, started taking alfalfa and both their cycles have really evened out!

I also noticed it helps my skin.   T-Tapp alone helps blood flow which brings that “glow” to your skin.  But I really think the alfalfa has helped even more.  I had bad acne as a teen (and a 20 something, and a 30 something….) and my skin never totally evened out.  Since T-Tapp and taking Teresa’s alfalfa, I get compliments all the time on my skin!  And I wear no make-up!  I am even taken for my daughters’ sister sometimes!  (Gotta love that! ;) )

Alfalfa is a legume, and it:

~Is anti-inflammatory
~Offsets cortisol
~Alkalizes body
~Tightens the skin

A few more interesting facts:

~The alfalfa comes from 2 fields–1 is sprayed with ionic minerals, 1 is not. Then they are “blended” together. No more than .003% variable on the minerals.  (Hence the name:  Premium Blended Alfalfa)

~Never less than 21.7% protein, and can be as high as 28.4% protein.

~It is cut and put in an air-conditioned facility, and is cold-press extracted.

~Mold alters the chemical make-up of protein, which can actually make you gain weight! That is why she goes to the lengths to keep it temperature controlled.

~Alfalfa reverses aging in the skin of the face according to a 5 year study from 1999.

Teresa’s Premium Blended Alfalfa is only the leaf–no sprouts or seeds.  From what I’ve learned, sometimes you can actually gain with some  brands of alfalafa!

It is somewhat pricey, but knowing the lengths Teresa goes to to keep this alfalfa at peak nutrient level, I’m surprised it doesn’t cost more!  She pays a LOT to ship it from the other side of the country in air-conditioned semis to keep the quality high.  It is then stored in air-conditioned facilities, too.  I really appreciate the lengths she goes to to bring us a quality product!

It has helped one friend of mine get off her bio-identical hormones completely!  Another friend on the forums said alfalfa helped her lower her Synthroid–twice!

It is helpful for menopause and for night sweats. Here are a few tips:

~No sugar or carbs before bed–can cause night sweats!

~1g carb retains 3g water

~take alfalfa before bed

~Protein helps rid body of edema and helps with elimination

I try to buy it when there are good specials and stock up!  It is one supplement I try not to do without–I had gotten sporadic back in April, and the cycle I had that month reminded me of why I take it!!!

Better skin, better hormones, a good anti-inflammatory–all in one great product, with quality you can trust!

Soooooo….

This week’s giveaway is a bottle of the Premium Blended Alfalfa!

To enter, you can do any or all of the following:

1. Leave a comment and tell me what “benefit” of alfalfa intrigues you the most.

2. Leave a comment each time you do a T-Tapp workout (yes, TappCore counts–at least 3 moves–so even you busy young mamas can enter! )  Let me know what workout you did (or which moves!).

3. Tell others about the giveaway–FaceBook, Twitter, e-mail, blog, forum (if appropriate–don’t violate any forum rules!)  Let me know you did and post a link, if applicable (I don’t have FB, but I have friends who do! )  You can do this up to 3 times a day if you so desire!

4.  This one counts DOUBLE!   I am hoping to certify as a T-Tapp Trainer this fall, and I also hope to offer some online classes.  What would you like to see in an online class?  What things would be helpful to you?   (It would probably be a 4 week class.)

If you post one day and think of something else the next, that’s fine!  You’ll get double points for BOTH posts! :)

Until next week–Happy Tappin’!  :D

T-Tapp Tuesday–Jazz Twist

May 31st, 2011

CONGRATULATIONS, TINAJEWEL!!!

You have won the SATI dvd!!!

Be sure to send me your address so I can get this out to you!  You can e-mail me at tinklingbells (at) medt (dot) com

A BIG thank you to ALL of you who entered the giveaway!

Last week, Cindy asked if I could address the Jazz Twist move.  That is a toughie, as any of the twists are!

First of all, always warm up with PBS first before any twisting moves.  That helps warm up the spine to minimize the possibility of injury.

Let’s get set up (after you’ve warmed up! ;) ).  If you were in my classes, this is what you’d hear!

Toes forward.  Not too wide a stance, feet only a mitten hand apart.

Bend knees to the ends of toes, if possible.

Tuck/curl that core (pull belly button to spine–initiate this from the abs and lower lumbar, then tuck tail slightly).

Lift ribs.

Push knees out.

To get into position for Jazz Twist, we step back one foot.  You need to be careful you don’t place one foot behind the other–it’s not a balance beam!  Just step straight back from the T-Tapp stance, and that is usually just about right.  Sometimes you might need to bring that back foot out a little more so the stance is a tad wider.

Let’s say you just stepped back with your right foot.  Good!  Now, stay flat-footed and look down to make sure you are not “ducking out”.  Your toes should be forward.  Adjust, then put your left thumb in your “thumb holder” in the middle of your hip (in back).  Stretch your right arm out (think whatever knee is bent, that elbow is bent; whatever knee is straight, that elbow is straight!).  Press the heel of your right hand forward and lightly fold the fingers over.  You are not reaching, right shoulder shouldn’t be forward at this point.  But keep the arm muscles tight!

Now, likely you collapsed your core through setting up, so let’s rebend that left knee, tuck/curl under, lift ribs, push left knee to little toe.

Really press that thumb into your hip/back, inhale,  exhale, lift ribs and initiate the stretch with your left shoulder going back, as in an archery pull.  You are pushing the right hand forward, but not across your body–straight forward, arm tight.  Be sure that right shoulder isn’t coming up to meet your ear!!!  :)

Inhale again, exhale and push that thumb and left shoulder back more, as far as you can twist (and for a short torso, that might not be far, but stay in the muscle–it’s not about how far but how far you can go and stay activated!).

Hold position 1-2-3 and tuck/curl, lift ribs, push knee out and bring it back. You are using those abs and obliques to help bring you back to starting position.

Before you go into the move, remember two things–

1. Always exhale on the twists (this will help you lose in the ribcage all in itself!)

2. Think “lift ribs” before you twist to get maximum “twist” action

Okay, make sure you didn’t collapse your core (quick check–bend, tuck/curl, lift ribs, knee out, right arm tight tight tight!) and inhale/exhale and twist for 4, really pushing that left thumb and pulling left shoulder back.

Then you can repeat the entire process on the other side!  I just step forward with the right, then step back left.   At the beginning, do NOT try to keep up with Teresa (as in Instructional 1 or BWO+!) as that is typically too fast for newbies, especially the singles!  I still prefer to do 4 on each side, then repeat (without the stretch on the second 4) or just do 8 each side. That’s actually the way she does it in one of the Tempos.  I  honestly did not get the singles with good form until last fall–3 1/2 years after starting T-Tapp!  (And I still prefer to do them the other way! ;) )

As you are twisting, you are wringing the lymph nodes along the spine.  If you haven’t been doing any balancing and twisting moves lately, that may release pockets of toxins that your body has stored for awhile.  If you experience a bit of nausea, that is actually a good thing and more common than you’d think!  Walk around a bit, unless you are really feeling weak, then go ahead and sit down.  Sometimes eating a bite of apple or cheese or some almonds helps.

Make sure also to drink plenty of water throughout the workout! I actually take many more water breaks than the dvd gives!   So don’t be shy to do so!

Cindy, if you or anyone has further questions about Jazz Twist, feel free to leave a comment and I’ll try to address it!

I was going to put Torso Twist in with this, but I decided to separate them so you don’t get too overwhelmed with too many tips at once!

Now for this week’s giveaway!

This week I will be giving away a copy of TappCore 2 SunRay Sit Down dvd!

Can I say I just love this dvd?!  It’s a fun sit down workout, 12 1/2 minutes long.  The kids from SunRay Elementary are the ones who won the HoeDown Showdown with Teresa–they did 51 sets, I believe!

Some of the moves will be familiar if you’re a MORE Chair devotee–but there are some tweaks and new things added that actually make this my new favorite sit down workout!  It can still get you sweating!

And seeing those kids just has to make you smile through your workout! :D

Okay, how to enter?  Much the same as last week, with a few changes.

1. Leave a comment and tell me if you’d use this for yourself or maybe a friend or relative.

4. Measure your ribcage.   Next time you work out, pause the dvd at Jazz Twist and take the time to set up and really work through this move at your pace, following the tips I gave you.  You can do a stretch, then 4 on one side, stretch then 4 on the other side, followed by 4 sets on each side without the stretch.  Or you can stretch on one side and do 8 sets, then repeat the same on the other side.  Then resume your dvd for the rest of your workout.

If it’s not a workout day, why not do PBS and Jazz Twist as above?  It’s a great move to help with spinal flexibility and lymphatic pumping!

If you do this, leave a comment that you did.  Yes, even if you do it every day, leave me a comment every day! (More chances to win!)  Then measure again on Monday and let’s see if you lose any off the ribs!  Remember–exhale fully on the twists and–ribs UP!

5. This one counts DOUBLE!   Tell me what you’d like me to address in future T-Tapp Tuesday posts.   If you have a big list (LOL!) just one entry per day on this one, please!

This giveaway will run until midnight Monday, June 6.  I will announce the winner next Tuesday as well as what the next giveaway is!

Let’s get Tappin’!  :)

Change of Plans…Again *sigh*

May 27th, 2011

Another daughter is running a fever and coughing.    I am praying she doesn’t also get pneumonia!

So my Fabulous Family Friday post will have to wait a bit.

Maybe I should make it about all the herbal medicine I’m learning about?! :)

Thank you for your patience—and prayers for Jessica and Leah (who is recovering s-l-o-w-l-y from pneumonia) would be greatly appreciated.   And that the rest of us wouldn’t get it, either!

If you want to see some beautiful pictures of our church camping trip last month, head on over to the girls’ blog post–Camping at Turkey Run.

Thank you to all who are entering the giveaway!  And it’s not too late if others want to enter–it goes until midnight Monday, May 30th!

Have a blessed weekend, dear friends, and please remember those who have sacrificed for the freedoms we now enjoy!
